LAPHROAIG 1998 Over 20 Years 54,9%
Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Islay, 70cl, Ref: 56554
When it comes to peated Scotch whiskies, Laphroaig undeniably holds a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts the world over. The iconic bottlings for the Italian market in the 60s and 70s, and more recently the legendary Laphroaig 1974 selected by La Maison du Whisky in 2005 are perfect examples. Going beyond superlatives with blissful naturalness, this version reveals one after the other all of the flavours and aromas for which this single malt is renowned. This is complimented by a timeless charm that is impossible to resist.
the distinguished first nose is heady (hyacinth), ashy, candied (lemon), chocolatey and honeyed (acacia). Allowed to breathe, the fruit takes on more breadth (gooseberry, blackcurrant). It then becomes increasingly medicinal (ointment). Notes of black truffle. The radiant attack sees peat flirt with anthracite and fleur de sel. Like a very subtle Havana cigar. The minimalist finish is herbaceous (sage), ashy, spicy (pepper) and salty. On the retro-nasal olfaction, grated ginger and acacia honey draw the tasting out indefinitely. The empty glass is exotic (passion fruit).

- Appearance : greenish gold.
- Nose : refined, distinguished. Heady florals (lily, hyacinth), ash, candied lemon, roasted pineapple, marshmallow, lavender honey and a chocolatey peat play the leading roles in a truly incredible first nose. Allowed to breathe, the fruit takes on more breadth (gooseberry, blackcurrant, wild strawberry). It then becomes increasingly medicinal (tiger balm, savory). A magnificent note of black truffle now floods the palate.
- Palate : rich, radiant. The very chalky attack brings to mind cliffs eroded by relentless waves. Peat flirts with anthracite, and fleur de sel seeps into coconut milk and the same roasted pineapple. The mid-palate is characterized by incredibly subtle notes of Havana cigar. Gradually, the chromatic palette takes on particularly bright yellow tones (straw, Mirabelle plum, pear, lemon).
- Overall : long, minimalist. The very delicately outlined contours of the flavour palette use charcoal to sketch the history of an intensely seductive peat that goes right back to the very origins of whisky. Next, aromatic plants (sage, verbena), ash, salt and grey pepper spread evenly across the palate. On the retro-nasal olfaction, grated ginger, nutmeg and acacia honey draw the tasting out indefinitely. With breath-taking finesse, the empty glass is smoky, fruity (pear), lemony, spicy (curry) and exotic (passion fruit).
- The brand
Due to its phenolic character, Laphroaig is well-known among amateurs. It’s no surprise then that the distillery owns its own peat bog, capable of guaranteeing the supply of peat for the next 4,000 years. Laphroaig will never lose its character nor, consequently, its fans and its critics – since such a peaty malt cannot be loved unanimously – even its water, drawn from the Loch Kilbride spring, is filtered through peat! Artist, Lands of Scotland, Malt Pedigree, Tartan, The Ten, Very Cloudy... all of these whisky ranges – composed of single malts and single grains – have one thing in common: they were all created by the team at La Maison du Whisky. They are the fruits of many decades of close collaboration with some of the most prestigious bottlers in Scotland. For some years the French importer and exclusive distributor of the classic ranges of well-known spirits producers, La Maison du Whisky was soon granted the very rare privilege of being able to complement these ranges with their own, bringing together two sets of expertise, two reputations and two complementary histories under one, single label.
Baptised ‘Artist’, this new range makes no bones about proclaiming its identity. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, it draws its inspiration from the style that gave the Italian bottlings of the 60s and 70s their cult following. From the choice of whiskies (distillery, ageing process, age, strength, bottling procedure) to the design of the bottle and choice of label, every detail has been carefully considered. This range offers a fine presentation of both the whiskies and the artist whose works have been selected for the back labels.
