Smooth and spicy, the wild, medicinal character of the 16 year old becomes sweet and smoky. Lastly, while the first versions distilled in 1979 have become collectors’ items, there is no reason to consider the current batches inferior.
Lagavulin Distillers Edition has benefited from a second maturation in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks that have contained a wine produced from sun-dried grapes, with intense flavours. Brilliantly chosen for its raisiny sweetness, as if by magic it accentuates and deepens each aspect of Lagavulin’s rich, intense character.

Lagavulin was the first distillery to legally produce whisky on the Isle of Islay. Located to the east of Port Ellen, which provides it with its malted barley, Lagavulin produces a peaty malt in strict respect of the island’s traditions. Smoky, marine and delicately woody, Lagavulin’s character has become a veritable ambassador for the Islay malts, particularly thanks to the Lagavulin 16 Year Old, which was chosen to represent the Islay malts in the Classic Malts range, and which has, in the space of 20 years, become a veritable icon.
