Tasting note

  • Appearance : mahogany
  • Nose : lively, clean. The initial nose is particularly vinous (ripe grapes) and spicy (cinnamon, clove). After this initial energetic approach, the nose is softened by notes of heather honey and bourbon-vanilla. Once aerated, its exotic natures has measured up the aromatic palette. Mango, passion fruit and guavas release their delicious perfumes.
  • Palate : rich, complex. With impeccable precision, the attack draws out the exoticism of the nose, adding floral notes (wilted rose, peony) to the combination. The mid-palate returns to the territory of spice (grated ginger, black pepper). Full of energy, it reveals itself to be particularly long, energised by the acidity of the lime and grapefruit that arrive in its grand finale.
  • Overall : long, mineral. The finish draws on notes of slate and pencil lead to enrich the fruity register of dark fruit (blackberry, blackcurrants) and dried fruit (walnut, almond). It lingers with noble wood and vanilla. The retro-nasal olfaction is sparkling and herby (lime blossom, vervain) and the empty glass returns to the vinous, spicy character of the initial nose.
The brand

The brand

The Kavalan distillery is named after an ancient tribe that used to the live in the region, in the north-west part of the island of Taiwan. Founded by the King Car Group, Kavalan did not hesitate to call on the services of the best experts in the industry, declaring their intention from the outset to make a whisky of exceptional quality. It was thus with the help of Jim Swann that the distillery produced the first drops of its new-make on 11 March 2006 and brought its first whisky to the market in December 2008. By selecting the best barrels, Kavalan managed to produce a range of single casks (sherry, bourbon and port) in 2009, only three years after it began production, and has already won numerous medals at a variety of international competitions.

The line

The Solist range brings together the most exclusive bottlings of Kavalan Taiwanese whisky. Bottled from a single cask, with no dilution, these single malt whiskies are always aged in one type of cask, stored in the cellars of the distillery of the same name in a tropical climate. Kavalan juggles with four kinds of cask to age its whiskies (bourbon, fino sherry, oloroso sherry and vinho barrique), but they are all identified by a series of figures that give more information about the ageing process. For example, for Kavalan Sherry Soloist 57.8%, the cask number S060821045 tells us the following: S = sherry, 060821 = date of distillation (21 August 2006), 045 = cask number. The bottling date is shown on the back of the bottle.
