The painting shows a group of local residient gather clams at low tide in the small fishing village of Noboto, located on the east coast of Japan. The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
