KARUIZAWA 1999 ARTIST 10TH Anniversary International 58,8%
Single Malt Whisky, Japan, 70cl, Ref: 58024
Located at the foot of the active volcano Mont Asama, the Karuizawa distillery was founded in 1955. It closed in 2000 and was then demolished in 2016. Numerous legendary bottlings have played an important role in developing the renown of this cult single malt produced from the famous barley variety Golden Promise. Karuizawa to the tip of its toes, this anniversary version reveals extraordinary power and smoothness. Long after the tasting, the notes of cinnamon, coffee, truffle, tobacco, orange peel, hazelnut and bacon found in the dried extracts of the empty glass reflect the richness and complexity of a palette of flavours and aromas that evokes paradise lost on more than one front.

Sourcing actor, importer and exclusive distributor of a portfolio of international brands, La Maison du Whisky is, since 60 years a reference for whisky and spirit lovers. Tasting note
- Appearance : mahogany with green hues.
- Nose : rich, complex. The sumptuous first nose reveals fragrances of fig, blood orange, emery cloth, flambéed banana and liquorice of great distinction. Allowed to breathe, particles of floating dust, aromas of precious wood, polish and leather bring the aromatic palette to evermore complex lands. Next, exotic fruits (mango, guava, persimmon), black fruits (bramble, blackcurrant), red fruits (wild strawberry) and apricot create a third sequence of aromas whose maturity is equalled only by its freshness.
- Palate : taut, lively. With rare intensity, the superbly liquorice and malty attack reveals notes of coffee, tobacco and dried fruits (date, fig). On the mid-palate, ginger, cinnamon and clove permeate chocolate flavours whose supremely elegant bitterness is a pure delight. Then it is time for heady florals. The end of the palate reveals bouquets of iris, gardenia and geranium delicately placed on antique furniture.
- Overall : long, delicate. Rich (spice bread, raisin bread, Corinthian raisin), the start of the finish is very delicately powdery (cocoa, ginger). Autumnal, with its notes of hummus and forest floor, it takes us back to the mushroom harvest (porcini, girolle, bolete). Gradually, chocolate and mint cover the taste buds with creaminess and freshness. On the retro-nasal olfaction, pressed orange, star anise and slightly burnt caramel ceaselessly prolong the tasting. Escaping from the empty glass comes notes of rosewood, Russian leather, spiced wood and sweet Havana cigar fill the air.

The brand
The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
Merchant
Artist, Lands of Scotland, Malt Pedigree, Tartan, The Ten, Very Cloudy... all of these whisky ranges – composed of single malts and single grains – have one thing in common: they were all created by the team at La Maison du Whisky. They are the fruits of many decades of close collaboration with some of the most prestigious bottlers in Scotland. For some years the French importer and exclusive distributor of the classic ranges of well-known spirits producers, La Maison du Whisky was soon granted the very rare privilege of being able to complement these ranges with their own, bringing together two sets of expertise, two reputations and two complementary histories under one, single label.
The line
Baptised ‘Artist’, this new range makes no bones about proclaiming its identity. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, it draws its inspiration from the style that gave the Italian bottlings of the 60s and 70s their cult following. From the choice of whiskies (distillery, ageing process, age, strength, bottling procedure) to the design of the bottle and choice of label, every detail has been carefully considered. This range offers a fine presentation of both the whiskies and the artist whose works have been selected for the back labels.
