Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : coppery-orange with old gold hues.
  • Nose : firm, tense. The initial nose presents a fine association between the vanilla flavours of bourbon casks and the rancio flavours of sherry casks reflected in the notes of dried fruits (apricot) and honey. On aeration, spices (clove, cinnamon) progressively come to the fore. Enriched by notes of white chocolate and heady flowers (mignonette, geranium). The whole displaying thunderous youthfulness and vitality.
  • Palate : bold, fine. Hits the right note and is extremely slender. Bourbon vanilla, cloves, heady flowers (lily, iris) and fresh walnuts dominate the hidden notes of chocolate. Resolutely light and elegant, coating the palate with honey and fruity notes (lime). Very much a Karuizawa, an expression of firmness, purity, refinement. Powdery (cocoa, coconut) and almost buttery on aeration.
  • Overall : long, slender. Initially, favouring the refreshingly delicious vanilla ice-cream flavour characteristic of bourbon casks. A fine apricot-rancio then highlights the influence of sherry. This subtle play of prevailing notes creates a kaleidoscope of colours with endless different shades of brown, orange, green and yellow. Both chocolate and vanilla notes in the finish. The empty glass is malty, spicy and plentiful (verbena, sage, tarragon).
The brand

The brand

The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 in the town of the same name, in the prefecture of Nagano surrounded by the Japanese Alps. Japanese whisky generally has a very good reputation, but Karuizawa is especially sought after and appreciated by connoisseurs; it has accumulated an impressive number of medals in competitions. Just like Macallan, it is a whisky that owes much of its character to the type of barley that is used: (‘Golden Promise’) and to ageing in sherry casks. Production stopped in 2000 and bottles are becoming increasingly rare.
