- The brand
Hours away from the Scottish mainland, miles away from ‘ordinary’; Jura might not be the easiest place to make whisky, but we believe it’s the best. One road, one pub and one distillery - and home to a determined community spirit. Free from distractions, we focus entirely on one thing – making the very best single malt whisky we can. This focus has now led us to a new place. A place reflective of our past, present and future where we can reveal a different side of our character. Signifying the start of a new chapter in our rich story, we have created a new signature style for Jura Single Malt Whisky, a style reminiscent of our past but with a firm eye on the future. An Island future shaped and supported with every step we take. The whisky itself sees a subtle smokiness brought together with a sweetness to create our new defining character. This sees us, for the first time, marry together the classic styles of Highland and Island malts, and unify these in one remarkable whisky.
Established in Glasgow in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing, the Douglas Lang company has, in recent years, made numerous changes to its structure. Fred Laing’s movement to the head of the company has contributed towards the business’s sound reputation. Known throughout the industry for the quality and variety of its cask selection (Douglas Laing still has casks from the most prestigious distilleries: Glenfarclas, Talisker, Ardbeg, etc.), the company has expanded its already rich range that includes historic selections such as Double Barrel, Premier Barrel and Director’s Cut, with two new collections guaranteed to please connoisseurs: Single Minded and Old Particular.
The Single Minded range was created in 2013 to replace the Old Malt Cask range, which was transferred to Fred Laing’s brother’s new company, Hunter Laing. A collection of single malts, all bottled at 41.5% and consisting of a blend of a small number of casks. Aged for between 10 and 15 years, these whiskies have strong characters that distinguish them from the official bottlings, while remaining affordable and accessible. An excellent introduction to the word of independently bottled whiskies!
