Founded in 1897, the Imperial distillery was closed more often than it was open before eventually being dismantled in 2002. Its single malt was notably used in the blends Teacher’s, Long John and Ballantines. This rare sherry cask version selected by Silver Seal’s owner Massimo Righi overflows with lyricism and reveals a boundlessly elegant, complex and deep palette of flavours and aromas. It leaves us with only one regret: that this Speyside single malt is now gone forever.
Tasting notes
Nose : Refined, deep. Superb notes of chestnut, Emery cloth, beeswax, cocoa powder, ginger and incense are released on the first nose. Allowed to breathe, red fruits (raspberry, redcurrant), dried apricot and sage aromas flood the air.
Appearance : Cuivre orangé à reflets verdâtres.
Palate : Lively, elegant. On the attack, candied citrus fruit (mandarin, orange) and coffee notes are coated in deeply noble flavours of malt and fruit (greengage plum, nectarine). The salty mid-palate is subtly spicy (cinnamon, star anise), powdery (rice cake) and woody (floating dust).
Overall : Long, fresh. The infused start of the finish (bay leaf, lime blossom) is both liquoricey and fruity (blackcurrant, bramble). The exotic after-taste reveals rich notes of ripe banana, roasted apple and marmalade. The very end of the finish is like a chocolatey and herbal Havana cigar.
