HELLYERS ROAD 14 ans 2004 Peated The Chronicles
Single Malt Whisky, Australia / Tasmanie, 70cl, Ref: 53538
Located in the north of Tasmania, more specifically in the town of Burnie, the Hellyers Road distillery has, since 1999, produced a single malt from primarily local barley. After the magnificent 12 year old in our 2018 Creation catalogue, we invite you to discover this "peated" version, which begins with a peat whose exoticism bears a certain resemblance to Laphroaig. Then, as the tasting goes on, it becomes spectacularly powerful and nuanced with lots of different aromatic plants.
Profile: the rich initial nose offers a delicate, floral (dandelion) and chocolatey peat. Allowed to breathe, it becomes fruity (white grape, peach), nobly spicy, lush (bay leaf) and floral (lily of the valley). The taut attack is smoky (cigar) and peaty. The mid-palate is rich (clafoutis) and jammy (marmalade). The sensual end of the palate is peaty and saline and its fruit bursting with sugar. Single Cask no. 4036.12 – First Fill Bourbon. Exclusive to LMDW.

- Appearance : burnished gold with glints of topaz.
- Nose : rich, unctuous. First, a delicate, floral (dandelion) and chocolatey peat envelops the outer edges of the aromatic palette. At its core, we find a mish mash of ripe fruits (plum, white grape, peach), noble spices (cardamom, saffron), a few aromatic plants (chervil, bay leaf) and heady florals (lavender, lily of the valley). It then develops into a sweeter register (prune cake, rum raisin ice cream). Every element is perfectly balanced.
- Palate : neat, taut. Smoke (cigar) and peat (oily) unmistakably lead the palate. And yet they allow us to take in deep breathes of the other flavours. With complete freedom, the mid-palate is rich (clafoutis, lemon meringue pie) and jammy (marmalade). The end of the palate reveals lots of minerality (schist) and a new fruity register (bramble, blueberry).
- Overall : long, smooth. With rare sensuality, the finish allows us to drink in a generous and salty peat, fruits bursting with sugar, and aromatic plants (sage, verbena, chamomile). The retronasal olfaction is nobly powdery (rice), smoky (soot, Havana cigar) and exotic (banana, mango). The empty glass enthusiastically restores every note of the initial nose.
- The brand
Still bottled at 46.2%, without chill-filtering or the addition of caramel, the single malt from the Hellyers Road distillery is a genuine product of the terroir. Unlike many other whiskies, its mashing, distillation and bottling are all carried out on site and the majority of its malt is produced in the region. Distilled for the first time in 1999, the whisky owes it character, not just to the richness of the land from which it is produced, but also to a cool climate that favours long maturation, to its skilful cask ageing techniques and to the diversity of the range it produces, which includes peated and unpeated bottlings, as well as classic maturations and special finishes.
The largest micro-distillery in Australia (producing 100,000 litres per year), Hellyers Road was founded in 1997. Located on the island of Tasmania, which is known more for its wines, salmon and lush green landscapes, the distillery owes its existence to a passion for whisky shared by the owner of a milk cooperative and a professional distiller: together they decided to create a new “milk”, which was malted and in a rather more Scottish style! Distilled for the first time in 1999, the quality of the whisky was quickly appreciated by connoisseurs, and is now one of the islands best exports, and among Australia’s most well-known whiskies.
