Description
With the Trelawny Endemic Bird Series, the Hampden distillery pays tribute to the rich wildlife of 67 different bird species living in the heart of Cockpit Valley, notably including the golden swallow, crested quail-dove, black-billed amazon and Jamaican blackbird. Originally selected as a bottling for Whisky Live Paris, which was due to take place in September, this OWH version, with an ester content of 40-80 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol, proudly represents the lightest style of rum produced by this iconic distillery. And yet, particularly warm and generous, it shows us Hampden in an intensely medicinal, deeply mineral and wonderfully syrupy (cane sugar) light.
Tasting notes
Nose : firm, powerful. Superb toasted, grilled and spicy notes (oak, richeria grandis) bring lots of energy to a first nose that is also medicinal (ointment), varnishy and roasted (coffee, mocha). Allowed to breathe, citrus fruit zest (lemon, grapefruit) and dried fruit (almond, hazelnut) appear alongside aromas of musk and camphor. The very dense aromatic palette gives the taster no chance to rest. Gradually, acacia honey, vanilla and white chocolate spread across its surface.
Appearance : deep mahogany.
Palate : lively, dynamic. After an initial sequence highlighting the distillate’s spirited character, delicious stewed banana and cane sugar flood the palate. Next, dried fruit (date, fig) bring lots of body to a deliciously herbaceous (bamboo) mid-palate. At the end of the palate, cocoa powder and grated ginger gently coat the taste buds. The flavour palette is extremely dense and concentrated.
Overall : long, delicate. The stunning start of the finish is heady (geranium), herbaceous (ivy), fruity (Mirabelle plum, banana, kaffir lime), refreshingly mentholated and roasted (coffee). The very peppery end of the palate is also honeyed (acacia), floral (rose, peony) and fibrous (sugar cane). On the retro-nasal olfaction, white florals drop their petals onto warm cane sugar. Just as concentrated and rich, the empty glass is a perfect summary of the nose and palate.
