If nothing else, it is impossible not to be drawn to the comic strip-esque labels on the bottlings released by the That Boutique-Y Whisky Company. In fact, they are even highly sought-after collector’s items. This truly magnificent and particularly rich Glentauchers bottled to celebrate La Maison du Whisky’s 60th anniversary undeniably possesses the old-school character of the single malts of yesteryear. Nevertheless, it is by no means an old-fashioned malt. Its fruity register, and the diversity and complexity of its floral and lush sequences, place its jaw-droppingly youthful aromas and flavours firmly in the present day.

Profile: rich, the nose is initially covered with a layer of salted butter caramel. It opens up onto candied fruits, beeswax, honeysuckle and spices. Very punchy, the palate is wonderfully crisp (apricot). Mature, it lingers with notes of dried fruit.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : burnished gold.
  • Nose : full-flavoured, rich. The initial nose is first filled with a delicate note of salted butter caramel. This then develops into candied fruit, beeswax and heady florals (honeysuckle, Rose Poivrée). Allowed to breathe, it becomes increasingly rich, inviting us to savour a delicious apple tart dusted with sumptuous noble spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove). The palette of aromas never stops gaining in power and richness.
  • Palate : lively, firm. The invigorating attack transcends the spicy character of the nose, before notes of peach and apricot create a more unctuous mid-palate. Gradually, nutty aromas (almond, hazelnut, chestnut) accentuate its autumnal character (moss, mushroom). Finally, a fine dusting of earth gradually covers these flavours.
  • Overall : long, dense. At the crossroads of the nose and the palate, the finish is at once warm, heady (honeysuckle) and spicy (star anise, cumin). Closely reflecting the malted barley, it lingers with notes of brioche and torrefaction. The retro-nasal olfaction is filled with the scent of spearmint and lime blossom. The empty glass is marked by sandalwood and verbena.

Founded in 1898, at the dawn of the biggest crisis to hit the whisky industry in the 19th century, Glentauchers spent its entire life overshadowed by production for blended scotch, with the majority of its malt being used for the Buchanan blend and, later, Black & White. After halting production during the two world wars, it finally closed its doors for good in 1985. In 1989 it was bought by the Allied Domecq group (Ballantine’s) before being taken over by the Pernod Ricard group in 2005. Though an official bottling did appear on the market in the 90s, bottlings of its single malts are seldom found. The rare versions that are available are released by independent bottlers such as Signatory Vintage and Gordon & Macphail.



Established in 2013, Maverick Drinks represents a number of producers from the US and Europe, focusing on craft spirits because consumers are increasingly looking for products with provenance, authenticity, and craftsmanship they admire.
