Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Highlands, 70cl, Ref: 14590

Our experts reviews

Glenmorangie is a pioneer in finishing techniques. It was the first distillery to offer whiskies finished in port and madeira casks; it was the first, and perhaps the only, to really master the effects of double maturation on whisky. Bill Lumsden, the head of distilling and whisky creation at the famous distillery, completely won us over with his single malt finished in Sauternes barrels. Finishing in Sauternes barrels gives the whisky liveliness and a thicker texture, without masking Glenmorangie’s malty, spicy and refined style. A classic, that La Maison du Whisky wholeheartedly recommends.

Glenmorangie is a pioneer in maturation techniques. It was the first distillery to bottle whiskies finished in port and madeira casks and is widely regarded as the first distillery to master double maturation. Bill Lumsden, director of distilling and whisky creation at the famous distillery, completely won us over with his single malt finished in Sauternes barrels, which invigorate the spirit and provide additional layers of complexity. After the Margaux appellation and, more precisely, the use of barrels from the eponymous château, Bill Lumsden, head of the barrel finish programme at Glenmorangie, visited a prestigious château in Sauternes to concoct this version that successfully lives up to its name: Nectar d’Or (golden nectar).

Tasting note

  • Appearance : old gold with glints of topaz.
  • Nose : ripe, fleshy notes of pineapple, banana and candied apricot are tempered by soft bitterness from the oak, followed by a touch of warming cinnamon and curry powder.
  • Palate : sweet and silky, with freshly baked bread, roasted coffee, cinnamon, toffee and peppermint.
  • Overall : oily and fragrant. Beeswax, lemon and passionfruit rounded off with soft bitterness.

The brand

The Glenmorangie distillery has, since 1843, produced its famous single malt in the north of the Highlands. It owns the tallest stills in Scotland, a legacy of the gin stills installed when it first began. A pioneer of maturation in ex-bourbon casks in the 1960s, Glenmorangie also began experimenting with different finishes very early on thanks to the help and great skill of the famous nose, Dr Bill Lumsden. Its series of finishes aim to marry the finesse of this single malt with the flavours and tannins of different wines during a second maturation that lasts around two years. Find out more

Le passage en barriques de sauternes se ressent intensément au premier nez. En bouche une rondeur et une douceur très plaisante. Pour ceux qui aiment les whiskies doux et sans agressivité.
