This classic Glendronach takes us on a journey to Andalusia. But while the sherry permeates the deepest depths of the aromatic and gustatory palette, it is always with the utmost elegance, finesse and freshness. To such an extent that the herbaceous, vegetal and floral character that often constitutes the central theme of this single malt gradually gains the upper hand. Long after, the notes of Havana cigar that peep through provide a perfect illustration.

Profile: concentrated, initial notes of chilli and flowers make way for sherry and chocolatey, exotic and fruity (strawberry) notes. The palate is remarkably Andalusian with sun-dried grapes. The finish is mentholated, salty and floral.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : orangey copper with glints of burnished gold.
  • Nose : full-bodied, concentrated. Tucked away behind the hot, spicy and particularly floral (lilac, lavender) opening, the sherry leaves its smooth, voluptuous mark on the aromatic palette. Candied orange coated with chocolate and praline rubs shoulders with exotic fruits (mango, passion fruit), red berries (strawberry, raspberry) and new heady florals (peony, hyacinth). With a very pleasant salinity, it gradually gains in warmth.
  • Palate : rich, firm. With incredible vivaciousness, the attack on the palate reiterates the Andalusian character of the nose. Grapes literally dry in the sun. The mid-palate is flooded with a handful of lemon zest and a vervain infusion. It evolves with notes of pipe tobacco and heather honey. Heady florals (geranium, honeysuckle) scent the back palate.
  • Overall : long, voluptuous. Initially reminiscent of a coffee-flavoured cream puff, it quickly becomes spicy (Espelette pepper, paprika). Mentholated and saline, its floral register slowly comes to the fore. Concentrate of iris, carnations and peppery roses emphasise its extremely heady character. The retro-nasal olfaction is chocolaty, liquoricey and herbaceous. A combination of all that comes before it, the empty glass is sunny and warm.
The brand

The brand

Glendronach means “valley of the brambles” in Gaelic. Located near the town of Huntley in the east of Speyside, this distillery uses traditional production methods (malting that includes partial use of a peat-fired kiln and stills heated by ‘direct firing’), which largely explains its powerful character and the strong personality of its single malt. It is always a very rich malt, with this demonstrated best in its sherry cask bottlings which reveal a perfect balance of sherry, malted barley and (red) fruit notes. Find out more
