- The brand
Located in the heart of the former capital of whisky, Glen Scotia is today just one of three distilleries in Campbeltown to hold a whisky production licence. This town, located in the south of the Kintyre peninsula, was the ancient scene of what could be called the “barley rush”, and in the 1880s was home to some 30 distilleries, including Glen Scotia, which was founded in 1832. At the end of the 20th century, Glen Scotia was mothballed on various occasions (from 1984 to 1989 and from 1994 to 2000), leaving it, likes its counterpart Springbank, with many shortfalls in its stocks. Mostly available as a 12 year old official bottling.
Although the independent bottler Signatory Vintage cannot claim to be one of the oldest in Scotland, it has managed to build up an extremely solid reputation amongst the great malt connoisseurs. The creator of the famous range The Prestonfield and many other well-known ranges, it is best known for its un-chillfiltered and cask strength bottlings that offer amateurs the chance to enjoy their whisky in its most natural form. It was also one of the first independent bottlers to acquire a distillery and now offers a growing number of expressions of one of the most artisan single malts available.
The Prestonfield range of whiskies is without doubt one of the most well-known among connoisseurs, and yet few people are aware of its origins. Created in the 1980s by the Symington brothers, the famous label with the drawing of the Prestonfield Hotel is now available exclusively through La Maison du Whisky. The whiskies selected for this range have always been some of the best but, from 2000, the decision was made to bottle them all at cask strength from a single cask. Almost exclusively single malts, these whiskies are extremely sought after, and often appear at the major auctions. Find out more
