GLEN GRANT 70 ans 1948 G&M 48,6%
Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Speyside, 70cl, Ref: 55823
Bottled at 48.6% in the Private Collection range, this 1948 Glen Grant is a rarity and the oldest Glen Grant ever bottled. After seven decades of maturation in sherry butt barrels of first filling, the character of the distillery is still very much present. This venerable single malt has managed to preserve elegance and freshness. The nose is first carried by notes of exotic fruits (ripe mango, candied citrus fruits) and spices (nutmeg, white pepper). The palate is complex, delicately tannic (sandalwood, peppermint) but always fruity (cooked pears). The finish is impressively lively and long for a whisky of this age, with slight traces of smoke, reminding us that at the time of the distillation of this whisky, Glen Grant and many Speyside distilleries still used peat to dry malted barley. A phenomenal single malt, thanks to its balance and vivacity.
Profile: Intense, complex. Black fruits, precious woods, sandalwood, quince paste, candied oranges, dark chocolate.

- The brand
Founded in 1840, Glen Grant for a long time remained the property of the Chivas Brothers group (Pernod Ricard), before winding up in the hands of the Campari group in 2005. Mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled as a five and ten year old, Glen Grant is a little known single malt, considering the production capacity of its distillery. Producing almost six million litres of pure spirit every year, Glen Grant has the fourth highest capacity in Scotland after Roseisle, Glenfiddich and Macallan. It’s known best amongst single malt amateurs for its first-fill sherry casks released by the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail.
This independent bottler is without a doubt one of the most highly acclaimed in Scotland. It stands out, not for its age (though it is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland), but for its complete mastery of cask ageing. Gordon & MacPhail is the only bottler to have its own casks - carefully chosen for the purpose - filled by the distilleries themselves, instead of simply buying the ones suggested to them by the latter. This allows it to determine, in advance and with great precision, exactly how many years a whisky will need to reach ideal maturation.
Selected by the directors of Gordon & MacPhail, the whiskies that make up the Private Collection all present exceptional quality and character. These rare, vintage single malts are usually from the top distilleries (Caol Ila, Glenlivet, Longmorn etc.), and are presented in very limited, sometimes totally unique bottlings. “Decades” is also part of the Private Collection range; this consists of six bottlings of Glenlivet, one per decade from the 1940s to the 1990s.
