Equiano is a collaboration of two distilleries on two different continents, creating something entirely new for the centuries old craft. The liquid is a blend from one of the best emerging distilleries in Africa, Gray’s distillery in Mauritius, and the world-renowned Bajan distillery - Foursquare.
Bringing these two rum purists together has meant that Equiano is a 100% natural rum, with no spices, no additives and no added sugar. All of it's rich and deep flavours come from the ex-bourbon and ex-cognac casks which they tropically mature in, making Equiano totally unique.
Named after Olaudah Equiano, a freedom fighter who paved his way to liberation through selling rum. Equiano was one of the first African writers to have his work published and his compelling memoirs went on to inform the Transatlantic Slave Trade Act of 1807. The Equiano Rum Co Foundation proudly grants 5% of company profits to ground level freedom and equality projects annually.
Nose : From the first nose, Equiano subtly delivers a tropical warmth. Initially rich, with notes of sultanas and Scotch toffee, the nose is then particularly sweet around soft caramel, vanilla and pastry aromas.
Palate : The palate offers all the natural sweetness of a rum aged in white American oak barrels that have contained bourbon. The flavours of soft caramel, raisins and brown sugar are quickly revealed. The whole is well balanced and caresses the taste buds as the tasting progresses.
Overall : The finish is complex and smooth with beautiful woody notes, a touch of anise and dried citrus fruits (bitter orange peel, candied lemon).
