BW is the abbreviation chosen by Speciality Drinks Ltd for this single malt produced by the distillery located in the capital of Islay as part of the Elements of Islay range. The especially exotic aromatic palette of this BW5 is a model of the oily, marine peat style. The taste palette, which is bursting with fruity and floral notes, finishes by branding the seven letters of Bow - more on the front of the vat.

Profile: particularly marine and saline, revealing an extremely exotic peat (passion fruit, mango).

Tasting note

  • Appearance : pale gold with a green hue
  • Nose : creamy, rich. The nose is particularly marine and saline, revealing an extremely exotic peat (passion fruit, mango). Bringing freshness, it then develops with green liquorice and Espelette pepper. It is very chocolatey and earthy (gentian) and constantly delves deeper into a creamy, root-filled (gentian) and spicy (cumin) peat.
  • Palate : lively and silky. The attack emphasises the purity of its rich, almost oily distillate. Heady florals (lily of the valley, carnation), dried fruit (apricot, almond), coriander, red fruit (strawberry, raspberry), gingerbread and vervain add strength to the mid-palate. Gradually turns milky (vanilla custard, crème fraiche).
  • Overall : mellow, balanced. Vanilla pods give the flavour of a succulent flan, while nutmeg adds lots of spice. The retro-nasal olfaction is empyreumatic (burnt wood, boiled sweets, thuja). The empty glass reproduces all the aspects of the initial nose.
The brand

A wine merchant recently founded by the Singh brothers, the owners of The Whisky Exchange in the United Kingdom, Speciality Drinks offers three ranges of very different single malts. The first, Port Askaig, is composed of four bottlings of an Islay single malt, including an expression with no age statement and a 30 year old! The second, Elements of Islay, celebrates the different distilleries on the island, each easily identified by their initials. The third, simply dubbed Speciality Drinks, offers a wide selection of single malts from Scottish distilleries.

The line

Taking its inspiration from the Periodic Table of elements, the British company Speciality Drinks created Elements of Islay, an exclusive range of single malts from the isle of Islay, bottled unchillfiltered at cask strength. Sourced from all of the island’s distilleries, these bottlings focus on the basic “elements” such as peat, iodine and tar resulting in some powerful whiskies with plenty of character!
