Since 2002, when it was bought by Signatory Vintage, Scotland’s former smallest distillery has produced two single malts that could be described as twin brothers. One, Ballechin, is peated. The other, Edradour, is not. Since then, many noteworthy finishes have been released and enriched the distillery’s recent history. Finished in a cask previously containing rum produced by the Worthy Pay distillery, this version is no different. Primarily focusing on cereal in its aromas, its flavours reveal perfect harmony between the malted barley and sugar cane.

the rich initial nose is malty and lush (sage, verbena). Allowed to breathe, it becomes fruity (pineapple, apple), floral (mimosa), spicy (cinnamon) and liquorice. Full of energy, the attack reveals refined notes of sugar cane. Very quickly, however, green barley envelops the palate. The mid-palate is rustic (dandelion), acidic (lemon) and chocolatey. The concentrated start of the finish is rich (frangipane, rice pudding cake). The exotic (banana) retro-nasal olfaction wavers between malting barley and freshly cut sugar cane.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : golden yellow with hints of green.
  • Nose : fine, rich. The remarkably malty first nose immediately takes us to a stunning green and luscious land. With superb herbaceous bitterness (sage, verbena), it gradually becomes very fruity (pineapple, apple, walnut), floral (broom, mimosa), spicy (ginger, cinnamon) and liquorice (stick). At this stage, the rum-cask finish plays the card of discretion, with, at the most, a handful of candied lemons appearing. Note that the aromatic palette is stunningly fresh.
  • Palate : clean, lively. On the attack, very fine notes of sugar cane arrive first on the surface of the flavour palette. Very quickly, however, green barley envelops the sides of the palate. On the mid-palate, a particularly mouth-watering roasted (coffee) and liquorice bitterness brings the tasting towards rustic (dandelion), acidic (lemon, grapefruit) and chocolatey registers. With time, warm cane sugar creates a delicious climax.
  • Overall : long, concentrated. The deliciously vanilla and heady (orange blossom) start of the finish is characterized by rich notes of frangipane and rice pudding cake. With its very refined texture, the end of the palate is very slender. The exotic (banana, pineapple) retro-nasal olfaction wavers between malting barley and freshly cut sugar cane. The empty glass is a subtle blend of green liquorice, walnut husk, ripe pear and cut grass. Spectacular!

The Edradour distillery is known most of all for the individual style of its single malt, which is exported throughout the world. Interestingly, the distillery’s owner Andrew Symington, has begun working on special finishes, each one more innovative than the last (Burgundy, Chardonnay, Châteauneuf-du-pape, Madeira, Moscatel, Port, Sassicia, Tokaji, etc.), with these new releases revolutionising the distillery’s somewhat outdated image. Under the directorship of Iain Henderson, the former director of Laphraoig, at the end of 2002 Edradour began producing a second, very peaty, single malt called Ballechin, the name of a former distillery in the region. The distillery

Since 2005, with the opening of the Kilchoman micro-distillery on the isle of Islay, Edradour is probably no longer the smallest distillery in Scotland. Tucked away on the edge of a small valley, among the hills over the town of Pitlochry, this distillery resembles a charming little village with its red shutters, landscaped garden and gently splashing stream. Purchased in 2002 by Andrew Symington, the founder of Signatory Vintage, Edradour has become more than just a tourist attraction. This distillery-farm concentrates all the operations involved in the production of whisky in a single room, from the mill to the still, which is the smallest size authorized by the British Customs and Excise department. Very traditional, Eradour receives 100,000 visitors a year, who are literally transported to the 19th century in this remarkable time capsule.



Although the independent bottler Signatory Vintage cannot claim to be one of the oldest in Scotland, it has managed to build up an extremely solid reputation amongst the great malt connoisseurs. The creator of the famous range The Prestonfield and many other well-known ranges, it is best known for its un-chillfiltered and cask strength bottlings that offer amateurs the chance to enjoy their whisky in its most natural form. It was also one of the first independent bottlers to acquire a distillery and now offers a growing number of expressions of one of the most artisan single malts available.
