A range of exclusive bottlings of pure buckwheat Eddu whisky, in a collection that pays tribute to famous fans of Brittany and whisky. This version is the second in the series and was selected by and for the writer Patrick Mahé, from among a handful of barrels made of oak from the Brocéliande forest. Distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2013, this is a powerful, spicy whisky.
Produced from buckwheat (the famous saracen), whiskies from the Eddu brand are unique and stand out from other whiskies for their taste that is like no other. Rounder, less full-bodied and lighter, the different Eddu whiskies are all marked by floral, fruity, spicy and nutty notes. Distilled twice in Charente stills, aged in casks from Cognac and the forest of Brocéliande, and gently reduced over many years in casks, these eaux de vie are produced using a combination of French and Scottish techniques. These whiskies are extremely innovative and at the same time remain faithful to ancient Breton traditions.
A small family company located in the far reaches of Brittany, the Distillerie des Menhirs has produced a selection of traditional Breton eaux-de-vie since 1986. Having started with the production of pommeau, cider and lambig (cider eau-de-vie), they came up with the idea of making a 100% Breton whisky. To give a solid basis to this audacious undertaking, and remain faithful to the region’s traditions, Guy Le Lay decided to distil the local black wheat (“eddu” in Breton). In addition to the two 100% pure black wheat whiskies (Silver and Gold), they now also produce a “blended” release, from a mixture of black wheat and barley, and some limited editions, aged exclusively in Breton oak barrels.
