Créée en 1986 par Guy Le Lay, la Distillerie des Menhirs produit avant tout du lambig, du cidre, du jus de pommes ainsi que le premier pommeau de Bretagne. En 1999, elle se lance dans la production de whisky et opte alors pour l’utilisation du blé noir (sarrasin) dont le maltage est particulièrement complexe et le rendement nettement inférieur à l’orge (1,3 kg pour une bouteille contre 0,8 kg pour un whisky d’orge). Ce choix contre-intuitif est motivé par l’envie de faire un whisky en phase avec le terroir et la culture bretonne. Il donnera naissance à EDDU (qui signifie blé noir en Breton), le premier whisky de sarrasin au monde. Pour la distillation et le vieillissement, la famille Le Lay s’équipe d’une paire d’alambics cognaçais, utilise principalement des ex-fûts de cognac et pratique la réduction lente. Distillé en 2011, le fût sélectionné pour VERSION FRANÇAISE incarne à merveille le croisement entre les siècles d’expertise du cognac et la personnalité forte du terroir breton.

The brand

Produced from buckwheat (the famous saracen), whiskies from the Eddu brand are unique and stand out from other whiskies for their taste that is like no other. Rounder, less full-bodied and lighter, the different Eddu whiskies are all marked by floral, fruity, spicy and nutty notes. Distilled twice in Charente stills, aged in casks from Cognac and the forest of Brocéliande, and gently reduced over many years in casks, these eaux de vie are produced using a combination of French and Scottish techniques. These whiskies are extremely innovative and at the same time remain faithful to ancient Breton traditions.

The distillery

A small family company located in the far reaches of Brittany, the Distillerie des Menhirs has produced a selection of traditional Breton eaux-de-vie since 1986. Having started with the production of pommeau, cider and lambig (cider eau-de-vie), they came up with the idea of making a 100% Breton whisky. To give a solid basis to this audacious undertaking, and remain faithful to the region’s traditions, Guy Le Lay decided to distil the local black wheat (“eddu” in Breton). In addition to the two 100% pure black wheat whiskies (Silver and Gold), they now also produce a “blended” release, from a mixture of black wheat and barley, and some limited editions, aged exclusively in Breton oak barrels.
