GLENBURGIE 1995 Over 20 Years 54%

Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Highlands, 70cl, Ref: 56548

Like Glentauchers and Miltonduff, Glenburgie’s history has always been closely linked to that of Ballantines, as its single malt is a key component in the famous blended scotch. In 2003, the distillery was completely rebuilt, and in 2005 it was bought by Pernod Ricard. Aged in a first fill sherry cask, this bottling reveals not only a sensation of maturity and fullness, but also lots of freshness and vivacity. This antagonism leads to a very natural palette of flavours and aromas whose main highlights are incredible charm, clear accessibility and amazing depth of field.

the deep initial nose is floral (reseda), fruity (orange) and jammy (marmalade). Allowed to breathe, it becomes spicy and then intensely malty and chocolatey. Candied mango brings lots of exoticism to the aromatic palette. The clean attack is honeyed (acacia), fruity (Mirabelle plum) and vanilla. The liquorice mid-palate develops with vanilla pod and aromatic plants (bay leaf). The well-balanced finish is a perfect summary of the nose and palate. Incredibly natural, it gradually becomes increasingly malty.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : burnished gold with copper tinges.
  • Nose : complex, deep. On the first nose, beautiful floral notes (reseda, petunia) appear alongside marmalade and candied citrus fruit (lemon, orange). Allowed to breathe, spices (cinnamon, ginger) create a very dynamic transition. Increasingly heady, the nose gradually becomes intensely malty and chocolatey. Next, with dried banana and candied mango, and rose jam and apricot stone, the aromatic palette weaves between exoticism and classicism.
  • Palate : clean, precise. With a remarkably pure expression, the attack is honeyed (acacia), fruity (Mirabelle plum, apple) and vanilla. On the mid-palate, a fine film of green liquorice and vanilla pod coats the taste buds. The very slender flavour palette develops roasted (coffee, praline) and forest floor (porcini, sweet chestnut) notes. The very fresh end of the palate focuses on lots of aromatic plants (bay leaf, chamomile, sage) and heady florals (broom, iris).
  • Overall : long, remarkably well-balanced. A perfect summary of the nose and palate, the start of the finish is vanilla, praline, floral, fruity and exotic. Deliciously mentholated, it then becomes increasingly herbal (cardamom tea, cappuccino), as herbaceous notes (bamboo, rush) weave together a very natural vegetal frame. On the retro-nasal olfaction, date and sweet chestnut are placed delicately upon this herbaceous bed. The divinely malty dried extracts escaping from the empty glass act as one with the end of the palate, creating perfect unity of tone.
The brand

The brand

Founded in 1829 (or 1810 according to certain sources), the Glenburgie distillery has always been linked with the Ballantine’s blend and the Allied Domecq company. Since 1958, Glenburgie had the unusual feature of housing two Lomond type stills, which are very rarely used in the industry. They were replaced by traditional pot stills in 1981. Interestingly, its malt can also be found under the name Glencraig, in tribute to William Craig, a former director of production at Ballantine’s.

Artist, Lands of Scotland, Malt Pedigree, Tartan, The Ten, Very Cloudy... all of these whisky ranges – composed of single malts and single grains – have one thing in common: they were all created by the team at La Maison du Whisky. They are the fruits of many decades of close collaboration with some of the most prestigious bottlers in Scotland. For some years the French importer and exclusive distributor of the classic ranges of well-known spirits producers, La Maison du Whisky was soon granted the very rare privilege of being able to complement these ranges with their own, bringing together two sets of expertise, two reputations and two complementary histories under one, single label.

The line

Baptised ‘Artist’, this new range makes no bones about proclaiming its identity. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, it draws its inspiration from the style that gave the Italian bottlings of the 60s and 70s their cult following. From the choice of whiskies (distillery, ageing process, age, strength, bottling procedure) to the design of the bottle and choice of label, every detail has been carefully considered. This range offers a fine presentation of both the whiskies and the artist whose works have been selected for the back labels.
