Tasting note

  • Appearance : jaune doré.
  • Nose : fin, complexe. Au premier nez, des notes de canne fraîchement coupée occupent le devant de la scène. Puis, de la cire d’abeille souligne l’influence d’un boisé d’une grande finesse. A l’aération, il évolue sur des notes d’olive et de sous-bois (champignon), de tabac, de fleurs capiteuses (géranium, rose) et de bruyère. Au fur et à mesure, des parfums intenses de fruits exotiques cuits (mangue, banane, ananas) prennent la mesure d’une palette aromatique qui est loin d’avoir livré tous ses secrets.
  • Palate : élégante, équilibrée. D’une très agréable douceur végétale (foin coupé, paille), l’attaque en bouche reprend à son compte le registre exotique du nez tout en se révélant très épicée (poivre, gingembre confit). Onctueux, le milieu de bouche est dans un premier temps chocolaté et abricoté avant de devenir empyreumatique (résine de pin, cèdre). Une délicieuse saveur de tapenade met en évidence le caractère gras et huileux de la fin de bouche.
  • Overall : longue, affirmée. En entame de finale, des notes d’hydrocarbures (gasoil) font évoluer le cours de la dégustation d’une manière on ne peut plus radicale. L’expression du terroir est à son comble. Puis, des mangues séchées et des citrons confits lui procurent la vivacité nécessaire à sa tenue dans le temps. En rétro-olfaction, de subtiles notes herbacées (verveine, sauge) et chocolatées rafraîchissent à bon escient le palais. Le verre vide dévoile des arômes de jus de canne et d’ananas rôti d’une grande pureté d’expression.

Traditional Haiti ! These highly artisanal eaux-de-vie, similar to white agricole rums, have long been the most popular drink in the remotest, poorest regions of Haiti. Bottled at natural strength, these three bottlings come from three different distilleries but have aspects in common: pure, well balanced alcohols capable of evolving interestingly and expressively in the glass. The Brazilian have cachaça, the Haitian have clairin!

The Velier company was founded by the Chaix family in 1947. From 1953 to 1983, this small traditional company, located in the port of Gênes, specialised in the importation and distribution of wines, champagnes and spirits. In 1983, then aged 25, Luca Gargano acquired shares in Velier. Under his influence the company began specialising in the importation of exceptional spirits to be supplied to the most prestigious establishments in Italy. In the early 1990s, Luca Gargano heard rumours of a mythical, quasi-legendary stock of St James Rum that had supposedly been distilled at the end of the 19th century. Eventually he discovered proof that this stock, distilled in 1885 and bottled in 1952, did indeed exist. And in 1991, following lengthy discussions, Luca finally managed to acquire the entirety of this stock, which he then released on the Italian market. These selections of rums have since multiplied and led to the birth of exceptional ranges.
