CHRISTIAN DROUIN 3 year old Double Maturation Sherry cask 50%
Calvados, France / Normandie, 70cl, Ref: 5087
Distilled twice, as are all Pays d’Auge calvados, this version was then aged in a tun for a year, before being finished for two years in an ex first-fill sherry cask. With astonishing maturity despite its young age, it is a wonderful illustration of the special care taken by Christian Drouin in the maturation of its eaux-de-vie. And as we all know, the appreciation of quality is not necessarily linked to age

- Appearance : deep gold
- Nose : both fresh and heady. The initial nose is marked by notes of grated apple and apple peel. Next the smell of apple trees in bloom further accentuates the highly perfumed register of this calvados from the Pays d’Auge. It develops with creaminess into acacia honey and beeswax. Delicately herbaceous (hay, lucerne), it also has a hint of liquorice.
- Palate : balanced, refined. The attack is both sharp and gentle. The apple, or rather the numerous varieties of apple that go into the blend, show their pure expression on the mid-palate. The influence of the sherry cask is underscored by the presence of exotic fruits (pineapple, persimmon), almonds and a very pleasant salinity.
- Overall : long, soft. Particularly vanilla, the attack is also creamy. Gradually, slices of apricot and rose petals land delicately on the taste palette. Juicy, it lingers with notes of dried fruit (date, walnut). The retro-nasal olfaction is floral (hyacinth, lilac). The empty glass alternates between noble wood and ripe, crunchy apples.
- The brand
Three generations from a family of enthusiasts have now handed down control of the Christian Drouin house, one of the greatest gems in the production of Calvados and in particular Calvados Pays d’Auge. Established in 1991 on a former stud farm in Coudray-Rabut near Pont l´Evêque, the estate boasts an exceptional range. In possession of the best and most comprehensive collection of old vintage Calvados - the oldest dating back to 1939 - Christian Drouin is to Calvados what Gordon & MacPhail is to whisky - a temple! Its cellar masters have been awarded numerous prizes in recognition of their skills.
The latest addition to the Christian Drouin calvados collection, “Calvados Expressions” is an instructional range that offers both novices and calvados enthusiasts a deeper understanding of this magnificent multi-faceted apple brandy. Presented in several “expressions”, the range reveals the richness and complexity of this little known French eau de vie.
