CHRISTIAN DROUIN Le Calvados - 60 ans LMDW 42%

Calvados, France / Normandie, 70cl, Ref: 5937

Domfrontais Calvados (protected designation of origin created in 1997) blends must feature pear content of no less than 30%, be distilled in column stills and matured for at least three years in barrels. Bottled by Christian Drouin, with its pulpy, juicy notes of ripe pear on the initial nose, this calvados propels us with gusto right into the heart of this appellation, which covers 115 towns mainly situated between the far west of the Orne department and the south-east tip of the Manche department.

Profile: fine, the nose is fruity, herbal and minty. On airing, soft spices and aromatic plants (camomile) accompany crisp apples as you wish. Piquant, the palate is softened by notes of vanilla. Pastoral, with notes in the empty glass of cider freshly drawn from the barrel.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant gold.
  • Nose : fine, fresh. Highly influenced by notes of pear, the initial nose also has herbaceous and slightly mentholated notes. Allowed to breathe, mild spices (cinnamon, cardamom) and aromatic plants (camomile, verbena) are accompanied by crispy, juicy apples. The aromatic palette is well established. It then becomes increasingly roasted (tobacco, coffee) and liquoricey.
  • Palate : lively, clean. Its spicy, peppery attack is softened by notes of vanilla and milky cream. Pears and apples fight out an almost Homeric dual on the mid-palate. Delicate tannins gradually cover the gustatory taste buds while dried fruit (walnut, apricot) flood the palate.
  • Overall : generous, balanced. From hedge to hedge, it takes us on a trip across the Normandy countryside to admire the bright, bucolic scenery. Equal amounts of pear and apple jostle for more room. The retro-nasal olfaction has delicate notes of chocolate and praline while the empty glass reproduces notes of freshly drawn cider.
The brand

The brand

Three generations from a family of enthusiasts have now handed down control of the Christian Drouin house, one of the greatest gems in the production of Calvados and in particular Calvados Pays d’Auge. Established in 1991 on a former stud farm in Coudray-Rabut near Pont l´Evêque, the estate boasts an exceptional range. In possession of the best and most comprehensive collection of old vintage Calvados - the oldest dating back to 1939 - Christian Drouin is to Calvados what Gordon & MacPhail is to whisky - a temple! Its cellar masters have been awarded numerous prizes in recognition of their skills.
