CAPERDONICH 23 ans 1995 30th Anniversary S.V 58,4%
Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Speyside, 70cl, Ref: 55204
Founded in 1897 by James Grant, the owner of Glen Grant, this distillery was originally called Glen Grant No. 2. Closed five years later, it did not reopen until 1965, under the name Caperdonich, before being mothballed in 2002 and demolished in 2010. Distilled on 13 June 1995, this version begins by shining a spotlight on an extraordinary strength of character in which spices and chillies play a key galvanizing role. Once this vibrant décor has been put in places, it leaves no doubt about its Speyside identity, inviting us to taste an abundance of fruits.
Profile: the concentrated initial nose is very spicy (pepper, nutmeg) and fruity (Mirabelle plum, green apple). Allowed to breathe, it becomes hot (paprika), vanilla and honeyed. The assertive attack is mentholated and peppery. The mid-palate wavers between citrus fruit, fresh fruit and exotic fruit. Note its extremely delicate minerality. The silky finish is liquorice and chocolatey, almost earthy.

- Appearance : burnished gold with glints of topaz.
- Nose : rich, concentrated. On the nose, strong spices (black pepper, clove, nutmeg, ginger) elegantly frame an abundance of fruit (Mirabelle plum, walnut, green apple, roast pineapple). Showing lots of presence, it becomes hot once allowed to breathe (paprika, cayenne pepper). Next, bourbon vanilla and lime blossom honey gradually bring their rich aromas. Much later, walnut husk, coconut milk and frangipane highlight all the complexity and depth of the aromatic palette. A note of rice pudding.
- Palate : dense, assertive. On the attack, peppermint and black pepper create a mouth-watering, breathless duo intent on awakening the taste buds. The mid-palate is filled with candied lemon, crisp pear and sugary pineapple. Gradually, a thin film of crushed almond, grated ginger and cocoa powder coat the palate. Enthusiasts will also enjoy the very delicate minerality (pencil lead, slate) of the flavour palette.
- Overall : long, silky. With the same determination as the nose and palate, the start of the finish covers the taste buds in whole chunks of liquorice, dark chocolate and even damp earth. Notes of cut hay and alfalfa bring refreshment. On the retronasal olfaction, various apples (greengage plum, Golden Delicious, boskoop) are added to this particularly rustic picture. With wonderfully noble expression, the empty glass is spicy (cardamom, saffron), roasted (tobacco) and floral (dandelion, daffodil).
- The brand
Founded in 1898, the year of the Pattison brothers scandal, which would see the end of one of the biggest booms in the history of scotch whisky, Caperdonich didn’t really begin producing its own whisky until the mid-1960s when it was bought by the Chivas Brothers. Its founder, the owner of the Glen Grant distillery, named it Glen Grant #2, a name it would keep until 1965. An important component in the Chivas Regal blend, Caperdonich has to this day never released any specific official bottling.
