CAOL ILA 2008 Over 5 Years 6TH EDITION S.V

Single Malt, Scotland / Islay, 70cl, Ref: 51966

Excessive from start to finish, this version of Caol Ila does not deal in half-measures. This is instantly apparent, not only in its peaty, smoky register, but also in the animal, marine, fruity, spicy, medicinal and herbal notes that bring enormous variation to this whisky’s aroma and flavour palette. Devoted to the high seas, it is only the tides that eventually bring this ship back to port, its hold brimming with treasure.

Profile: the nose is powerful, offering a very liquoricey, milky peat. As it breathes, notes of cured meat and stables evolve, highlighting its animal character. On the palate, waves of fruit (peaches and apricots) infiltrate the peat, iodine, sea spray and spices.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : very pale gold.
  • Nose : firm, powerful. A very liquoricey and milky (almond) peat dominates the initial nose. Then notes of leather, cured meat, and stables highlight its animal character. Fans will particularly appreciate this superb initial expression of the Caol Ila aromatic style. Maintaining a powerful presence, it becomes iodised and marine (shellfish) before being wreathed in delicate smoke.
  • Palate : taut, lively. The fruit in the distillate literally explodes in the mouth. To such a point that it takes a little time for the peat and smoke to make their way back to centre stage. Even then, citrus and ripe fruit (pear, peach, apricot) attempt to invade the mid-palate. However, that is put on hold as gusts of pepper announce the vigorous return of damp earth, thick smoke and extremely iodised notes. Towards the end of the mid-palate, the peat regains its rightful strategic position.
  • Overall : long, assertive. Exuding maturity, the finish is deeply rooted in Islay soil. As the tides rise and fall, we inhale hearty lungfuls of salty sea spray. Notes of cut hay, lemon and peppermint precede a liquoricey, creamy (vanilla) retro-nasal olfaction. The empty glass is medicinal (balsam, mustard poultice) and herbal (sage, vervain).
The brand

The brand

As well as reflecting its smoky, malted barley, Caol Ila is also oily and peaty, with marine and vegetable notes. Its recent official bottlings, which are particularly expressive, have an intense smoky and peaty character with a good balance of saltiness and sweetness. Superb versions of this single malt have also been released by independent bottlers Gordon MacPhail & Signatory Vintage. Caol Ila’s stills, which are large and onion-shaped, have a strong influence on this single malt and give it a fairly light and delicate character. Find out more

Artist, Lands of Scotland, Malt Pedigree, Tartan, The Ten, Very Cloudy... all of these whisky ranges – composed of single malts and single grains – have one thing in common: they were all created by the team at La Maison du Whisky. They are the fruits of many decades of close collaboration with some of the most prestigious bottlers in Scotland. For some years the French importer and exclusive distributor of the classic ranges of well-known spirits producers, La Maison du Whisky was soon granted the very rare privilege of being able to complement these ranges with their own, bringing together two sets of expertise, two reputations and two complementary histories under one, single label.

The line

Baptised ‘Artist’, this new range makes no bones about proclaiming its identity. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, it draws its inspiration from the style that gave the Italian bottlings of the 60s and 70s their cult following. From the choice of whiskies (distillery, ageing process, age, strength, bottling procedure) to the design of the bottle and choice of label, every detail has been carefully considered. This range offers a fine presentation of both the whiskies and the artist whose works have been selected for the back labels.
