CAOL ILA 2008 Over 5 Years Batch 2 6TH EDITION S.V 61,1%

Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Islay, 70cl, Ref: 51967

A noseful of this Caol Ila is enough to demonstrate that the French dramatist Pierre Corneille was right when he said, “for souls nobly born, valour does not await the passing of years”. Energetically expressing the impetuous generosity of its youth, this version is also characterized by the quiet assurance of an “old sea dog”. This juxtaposition of opposites results in a complex, authentic Islay that will undoubtedly appeal to fans of peat, smoke and iodine, of which there are a fair number.

Profile: the nose is fresh, with a smoky, salty, peaty, rustic character. On aeration, spices, camphor and menthol complete the classic Caol Ila aromatic palette. Tasting brings a damp, medicinal peat, full of the lyricism of spring. The finish sets sail and fills our lungs with sea air.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : pale gold.
  • Nose : fresh, sharp. The initial nose reveals an abundance of smoke, sea spray, iodine, increasingly rich, oily peat, wild flowers, and a hint of citrus fruit (lemon, grapefruit). Continuing, it reveals spices (pepper, cloves), camphoric and mentholated notes, tar and flowers (carnation, lilac, lily of the valley). In two words: Caol Ila.
  • Palate : lively and very fresh. Damp peat, medicinal notes, sleet, iodine tincture, smoked fish, salt and a healthy dose of chilli combine to create a wonderfully lyrical attack. Green liquorice, cut hay and camphor then provide a solid base to an energetic mid-palate. Notes of agave, dandelion and dark chocolate emerge.
  • Overall : balanced, invigorating. While the peat and smoke are still very present, they have a more spring-time character. We are taken across fields in bright sunshine to breathe in the ocean air. Deeply marine, it gradually becomes coated in seaweed and saline alluvium. The retro-nasal olfaction is a vibrant homage to the smoked malted barley and to a distillate with a magnificent clarity and purity of expression. The empty glass returns to herbaceous (artichoke heart) and milky (agave) notes.
The brand

The brand

As well as reflecting its smoky, malted barley, Caol Ila is also oily and peaty, with marine and vegetable notes. Its recent official bottlings, which are particularly expressive, have an intense smoky and peaty character with a good balance of saltiness and sweetness. Superb versions of this single malt have also been released by independent bottlers Gordon MacPhail & Signatory Vintage. Caol Ila’s stills, which are large and onion-shaped, have a strong influence on this single malt and give it a fairly light and delicate character. Find out more

Artist, Lands of Scotland, Malt Pedigree, Tartan, The Ten, Very Cloudy... all of these whisky ranges – composed of single malts and single grains – have one thing in common: they were all created by the team at La Maison du Whisky. They are the fruits of many decades of close collaboration with some of the most prestigious bottlers in Scotland. For some years the French importer and exclusive distributor of the classic ranges of well-known spirits producers, La Maison du Whisky was soon granted the very rare privilege of being able to complement these ranges with their own, bringing together two sets of expertise, two reputations and two complementary histories under one, single label.

The line

Baptised ‘Artist’, this new range makes no bones about proclaiming its identity. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, it draws its inspiration from the style that gave the Italian bottlings of the 60s and 70s their cult following. From the choice of whiskies (distillery, ageing process, age, strength, bottling procedure) to the design of the bottle and choice of label, every detail has been carefully considered. This range offers a fine presentation of both the whiskies and the artist whose works have been selected for the back labels.
