Single Malt, Scotland / Islay, 50cl, Ref: 18655

Remarkably elegant and balanced, this Caol Ila wonderfully embodies the Samaroli style throughout the tasting. First the nose, which is both unrestrained and discrete. Then the palate is more imposing, but it also has a lively freshness. Last but not least, the finish is extremely harmonious, allowing each note to unfold and express its vibrato at the right moment.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant gold.
  • Nose : fine, subtle. The nose diffuses, one after the other, bursts of intermingling scents: a delicate smokiness, a light liquorice-flavoured peatiness, vanilla pods, coconut milk, apricot, then mango and pineapple. They blend together perfectly to produce a remarkably balanced effect.
  • Palate : ample, rich. Transcends the nose and offers a more pronounced peat with a hint of liquorice. A mild herbaceous and mentholated bitterness (malted peaty barley) gives it lots of freshness. With notes of Calisson d’Aix (French sweets made of candied fruit, ground almonds and royal icing) and orange blossom cake, the mid-palate is particularly smooth. It lingers with notes of heady florals.
  • Overall : long, distinguished. Peat, citrus fruit, smoke, spices (ginger and cinnamon) and flowers are intimately combined. Here reigns a feeling of intense communion, since none of these flavours seek to overpower the others. The retro-olfaction and empty glass are in unison.
The brand

The brand

As well as reflecting its smoky, malted barley, Caol Ila is also oily and peaty, with marine and vegetable notes. Its recent official bottlings, which are particularly expressive, have an intense smoky and peaty character with a good balance of saltiness and sweetness. Superb versions of this single malt have also been released by independent bottlers Gordon MacPhail & Signatory Vintage. Caol Ila’s stills, which are large and onion-shaped, have a strong influence on this single malt and give it a fairly light and delicate character. Find out more

Founded in 1968, Samaroli is now one of the last remaining Italian whisky bottlers. Its founder, Silvano Samaroli was responsible for legendary bottlings, including a highly-prized 1966 Bowmore. Following a tasting of some very fine quality samples, we decided to introduce a small range of Samaroli bottlings that reflect the company’s dedication to its craft.
