Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : topaz
  • Nose : full-bodied, delicate. A smoke that evokes fish, wonderfully candied citrus fruit, spices so sweet they verge on sugary, vanilla, fresh walnut, divinely syrupy honey, pipe tobacco, a handful of cocoa beans, a hint of vanilla, peat that plays hide and seek, white flowers and much more.
  • Palate : clean, sharp. The palate marks its territory right from the start. It is peaty, liquoricey, oily and herbaceous (cut hay, malted barley). Spices (clove, pepper), heady florals (lily, iris) and exotic fruits (pineapple, mango) gradually manage to penetrate this scene. Marine, it takes us to the sea front to breath in the salty, saline air. The end of the palate reinforces its spicy temperament (star anise, cinnamon).
  • Overall : long, calmed. A very rustic finish (dandelion, pasture) that evokes salty meadows. Notes of salicornia accentuate the eminently coastal aspect of its personality. Enthusiasts will enjoy the cod-liver oil flavours and fuel vapours emitted by the engines of fishing boats entering the port and exhaled by the retro-nasal olfaction. The empty glass is Caol Ila-esque.
The brand

The brand

As well as reflecting its smoky, malted barley, Caol Ila is also oily and peaty, with marine and vegetable notes. Its recent official bottlings, which are particularly expressive, have an intense smoky and peaty character with a good balance of saltiness and sweetness. Superb versions of this single malt have also been released by independent bottlers Gordon MacPhail & Signatory Vintage. Caol Ila’s stills, which are large and onion-shaped, have a strong influence on this single malt and give it a fairly light and delicate character. Find out more

Artist, Lands of Scotland, Malt Pedigree, Tartan, The Ten, Very Cloudy... all of these whisky ranges – composed of single malts and single grains – have one thing in common: they were all created by the team at La Maison du Whisky. They are the fruits of many decades of close collaboration with some of the most prestigious bottlers in Scotland. For some years the French importer and exclusive distributor of the classic ranges of well-known spirits producers, La Maison du Whisky was soon granted the very rare privilege of being able to complement these ranges with their own, bringing together two sets of expertise, two reputations and two complementary histories under one, single label.

The line

Baptised ‘Artist’, this new range makes no bones about proclaiming its identity. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, it draws its inspiration from the style that gave the Italian bottlings of the 60s and 70s their cult following. From the choice of whiskies (distillery, ageing process, age, strength, bottling procedure) to the design of the bottle and choice of label, every detail has been carefully considered. This range offers a fine presentation of both the whiskies and the artist whose works have been selected for the back labels.
