Porto

Port wines come from a unique terroir that is defined by a protected designation of origin. Created by the Portuguese and the English in the 17th century, these are wines to which alcohol is added during fermentation (which then stops), as opposed to after fermentation, as for example with sherry. Several types exist, made from both black and white grape varieties. The most common are the Tawnies and Colheitas, that are aged mainly in barrels and lighter; however, there are also the heavier Ruby, LBV and Vintage ports, aged partly in barrels, but mainly in the bottle.
