Champagne is a sparking wine produced in the Champagne-Ardenne region. Protected by a strict designation of origin system (AOC), there are four main terroirs, stretching from north to south: the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne, the Côte des Blancs and the Côte des Bars. There are white and pink champagnes, made from Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, and vinified according to the famous ‘méthode chamapneoise’. Like the Cognac region, Champagne is essentially a blend of different terroirs and wines, even though an increasing number of grape growers bottle their own wines, rather than working with the large producers.
