To thank him for his exploits combating pirates, Captain Fernando Fernández was given the Hacienda Santa Ana in Puerto Rico by the King of Spain in 1797. Here, the Fernández family began their rum production, from the sugar cane cultivated in the northern part of the island. The distillery rapidly became very successful, thanks to their rum aged in ‘barrilito’ (small barrels). Ron del Barrilito is still produced today by the Fernández family according to a 200-year-old tradition. During the ageing process the ‘angel’s share’, which can be up to 40%, is not replaced by adding younger rums. The resulting unique rum is therefore only available in very small quantities.
