BOWMORE 22 ans 1996 The Chronicles 53,6%
Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Islay, 70cl, Ref: 55168
Founded in 2013 by Andréa Ferrari, Hidden Spirits is a young Italian bottler based in Ferrare. In addition to hand-picked single malts, it also bottles very high-quality rums. Abound with flavours and aromas, this version enthusiastically reproduces the oily, humid, chocolate, medicinal and salty character of the Bowmore peat. Stimulating the taster's imagination, its notes of seaweed and kelp, and intensely marine setting are an invitation to walk the banks of the nearby Loch Indaal.
Profile: the pulpy initial nose reveals white florals, exotic fruits and an oily, salty peat. Allowed to breathe, it becomes spicy and animal (bacon). The unctuous attack brings out a rich and marine peat before heading for exotic lands (passion fruit). The ethereal finish offers a very soft and chocolatey peat. Exclusive to LMDW.

- Appearance : greenish gold.
- Nose : pulpy, sappy. The initial nose reveals white florals (lily of the valley, lilac), exotic fruits (pineapple, passion fruit), a peat of rare elegance that is at once oily and salty, coconut milk, fresh walnut, saltpetre, clove and star anise... These are followed by dried apricot, lemon, white chocolate, new heady florals (rose, peony), leather and bacon. Placed end to end, all of these notes sculpt the aromatic palette of this particularly complex Bowmore.
- Palate : simultaneously lively and creamy. Right from the start of the palate, dark chocolate envelopes a rich, marine (iodine, sea spray) peat. All around it, wildflower and red fruits (strawberry, raspberry) bring lots of freshness and colour. Playing the intermediary, the mid-palate is deeply malty and vanilla, before the end of the palate returns to the exoticism of the nose (passion fruit, guava).
- Overall : ethereal, distinguished. The finish beautifully reproduces all of the beauty and silky texture typical of the finest Bowmores. The mouthfeel is incredibly soft and the presence of a chocolate, floral and fruity peat that is constantly coated in salt is a highlight of this stately finish. The retronasal olfaction reveals notes of liquorice stick, grated ginger and mango coulis. The empty glass wavers between crème brûlée, smoke, soot and cut hay.
- The brand
Bowmore, founded in 1779 in the town of the same name on the Loch Indaal coast, is the oldest distillery on the Isle of Islay. The No.1 Vaults has played a major role in building its renown, not simply because of the quality of the casks it holds, but also because of its exceptional location. It is actually located below sea level, with the seawall acting as the one of the walls of the vault. The distillery is also famous for its medium-peated bottlings and the special cask finishes that have won it huge acclaim. Still operating according to traditional methods, its barley is partially malted on site. Find out more
