BLANTON'S Single Barrel #884 Edition 2018 The Chronicles 55%
Bourbon, United States / Kentucky, 70cl, Ref: 55058
The first single barrel bourbon ever created in 1984, Blanton's played a major role in bringing American whiskey to the world's attention. And, there's no denying it, more than 30 years later its success is in no way waning. Naturally getting straight to point, this version begins by reproducing notes of maize with rare intensity. Then, keeping to this direct style, the palette of flavors and aromas is endlessly enriched, with each new aroma and flavor being clearly identifiable.
Profile: the initial nose is well-balanced and opens with maize before moving into nutty aromas (walnut, almond). With mature notes, it becomes honeyed, floral (lime blossom) and spicy. The lively attack is chocolatey and fruity (orange, strawberry). The mid-palate is roasted (coffee) and exotic (mango). The long finish is like an apple tart. Notes of new oak also accentuate its spicy character.

- Appearance : old gold with hints of copper.
- Nose : balanced, delicate. The initial nose begins with maize before a number of nutty aromas (walnut, almond, and hazelnut) come to the surface. With remarkable fullness and maturity, it gradually becomes increasingly honeyed, floral (bay leaf, lime blossom), spicy (black pepper), hot (Cayenne pepper) and mentholated.
- Palate : lively yet balanced. The perfectly sculpted contours of the attack allow full expression of chocolate, praline, confit orange and red fruits (strawberry) notes. The mid-palate is delicately roasted (tobacco, coffee). The very open end of the palate is particularly exotic (mango, guava).
- Overall : long, generous. With lots of emotion, the finish evokes grandmother's apple tart. At the same time, notes of new oak bring out its spicy character (ginger, clove). The retronasal olfaction is marked by vanilla/bourbon. The very heady (cowry, alfalfa) and autumnal (cashew) empty glass is empyreumatic.
- The brand
In 1983, Blanton’s was the first bourbon to be released as a single cask bottling, revolutionising American whiskey in the process. It is produced in the Buffalo Trace distillery in the heart of Kentucky. This straight bourbon is named after Colonel Blanton who ran the distillery from 1912 to 1953. Inspired by his predecessor, Blanton’s creator took advantage of the end of cask rotation, and decided to allow each cask to express its own unique flavour profile. This is why Blanton’s different expressions are able to offer a succulent and precise range of cereal, spice, candied fruit, citrus fruit and floral notes. Find out more
