BENROMACH 9 ans 2011 First Fill Sherry Hogshead Single Cask French Connections 60,8%
Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Speyside, 70cl, Ref: 58103
Founded in 1898, the Benromach distillery was mothballed for the first time from 1931 to 1937. After closing again in 1983, it was bought in 1992 by the renowned independent bottler’s Gordon & MacPhail. After being fully reconstructed, it opened again in 1998 with the aim of producing a Speyside single malt like those produced in the 1950s, which is to say, a lightly peated malt (12 ppm). Wonderfully embodying the very malty and slightly peaty Benromach style, with its lemony, salty and herbaceous notes, this version is unmistakably reminiscent of a fino sherry from a major limestone terroir (albariza). Others will note the oxidative character of a Jura Vin Jaune.

- Appearance : deep burnished gold.
- Nose : full-bodied, refined. First, malted barley, vanilla, dried fruit and nuts (raisin, walnut), toffee, various spices (ginger, nutmeg) and iris butter spread a particular sunny light across the aromatic palette. Allowed to breathe, a very subtle fruity (apricot, mango, peach) rancio and candied citrus fruit (lemon, grapefruit) highlight the sherry’s stunning influence. Superbly salty, it lingers with the aromas of peat, heady florals (lily, broom) and literally enveloping aromatic plants (camomile).
- Palate : lively, precise. The attack immediately places sherry at the heart of the tasting. Notes of café au lait and salted butter caramel. Next, a fine peat coats the lower part of the palate. On this earthy foundation are placed fresh fruits (pear, Mirabelle plum), exotic fruits (pineapple, banana), cinnamon and curry. The end of the palate is undeniably medicinal (ointment, arnica), spiritual (incense) and delicately woody (oak, wax).
- Overall : long, heady. The particularly spicy (Cayenne pepper, Espelette pepper) start of the finish is of rare concentration. Its powdery character (rice) fits perfectly with the numerous spices (saffron, cardamom, white pepper) that gradually fill the air. This noble expression is further accentuated by the presence of extremely evocative chocolate and herbaceous (tobacco, sage) flavours. On the retro-nasal olfaction, vanilla and almond milk refresh the taste buds. The empty glass releases aromas of warm bread, burnt wood and star anise.
