“Astonishing” is definitely the best adjective to describe this bottling, which invites us to discover Benriach in a particularly medicinal light. And it suits it very well, showing huge energy and exceptional complexity. Die-hard fans of this single malt - and there are lots of them - will also find moments of exotic fruitiness, its usual creamy, almost honeyed, character and the mentholated freshness that it is so well-known for.

Profile: fresh. The nose is unusual, with a powdery (rice), juicy (white grape), green (green malt) character. Notes of olive. Exotic fruit (pineapple). The palate is a mixture of spices, buttery notes and aromatic plants (rosemary, fennel). Fruity finish (orange, strawberry, blackberry).

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant golden yellow.
  • Nose : fresh, taut. The initial nose is very original, delicately powdery (cocoa, rice), juicy (white grape), medicinal (camphor, tiger balm) and green (green malt). It develops with notes of oak, green olive and caraway. Altogether it shows huge personality. Allowed to breathe, exotic fruits (pineapple, banana) gradually come to the front of the stage.
  • Palate : lively and taut. Just like the nose, the palate is very original. Along with a mix of spices (pink peppercorn, liquorice), buttery notes (crème au lait), aromatic plants (tarragon, camomile) and an almost medicinal warmth, the palate shows remarkable freshness. Gradually this duality finds its equilibrium and the end of the palate becomes honeyed and vanilla. Bathed in salinity, the palate boasts great length.
  • Overall : silky, almost rich. The finish is at first mentholated, herbaceous (fennel, rosemary) and spicy (caraway, cinnamon). It then gradually moves into chocolate and liquorice. Very pleasant bitter notes lend incredible vitality to the end of the palate. The retro-nasal olfaction reveals vanilla, a touch of camphor and fruit (orange, wild strawberry, blackberry). The empty glass is fruity (green apple), spicy and mentholated.
The brand

The brand

Rather unjustly, Benriach was, until just a few years ago, relatively unknown, but it hasn’t ceased to make up for lost time. Indeed, this distillery has, for many decades, had a huge amount to offer and has proven this time and time again since being bought in 2004. Its warehouses are bursting with all sorts of sherry butts (Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, etc.), new American oak casks, ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads dating back to the 1960s, as well as casks previously used for wine, rum, madeira, port and even Rioja! This Speyside single malt is entirely worthy of the interest it has garnered from master blenders since its creation. Find out more
