An LMDW exclusive

Describing Ben Nevis’ single malt is both easy and extremely complex. Enthusiasts, of which there are more and more, love this single malt not only for its many qualities but also for its occasional flaws. Authentic and rich in emotion, this version plunges us immediately into the fantastical world of the finest Ben Nevis malts. Excluding the word monotone from its vocabulary, it invites us to climb the steep paths of an aromatic palette that is exotic, then medicinal, then floral and even herbaceous. Arriving at the peak of Scotland’s highest summit, all that remains is to make the most of the present moment and enjoy the stunning spectacle it offers.

Profile: the deep first nose is oxidative. Autumnal fragrances of fallen leaves and mushroom (porcini) take centre-stage. Gradually, exotic fruits (mango, persimmon), walnut and more medicinal and empyreumatic (incense) notes plunge us into the heart of a complex aromatic palette. The delicate attack is chocolate and honeyed (lavender). The slender mid-palate is then exotic (pineapple). The herbaceous (cut hay) end of the palate places rose petals on the palate. The well-rounded finish invites meditation. Black fruit (bramble), candied apricot, heady florals (broom), pipe tobacco and orange blossom testify to the complexity of the end of the palate.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : biscuit with green glints.
  • Nose : deep, enveloping. Wonderfully embodying the Ben Nevis style, the first nose is very oxidative. Autumnal fragrances of fallen leaves and mushroom (girolle, truffle, porcini) take centre-stage. Gradually, exotic fruits (mango, persimmon), fresh walnut and more medicinal (mustard poultice, tiger balm), empyreumatic (incense, burnt wood), powdery (rice) and deeply malty (porridge) notes plunge us into the heart of a lyrical, complex and traditional palette of aromas. Ben Nevis in all its glory!
  • Palate : refined, delicate. The incredibly smooth attack is characterized by flavours of Liège chocolate, milky tea and lavender honey. The very slender mid-palate is occupied by new exotic fruits (pineapple, banana). Also herbaceous (damp straw, sage) and marvellously velvety, the after-taste places rose petals and peony on the palate. Finally, dried fruit (Corinthian raisin, date) leaves a signature full of twists and turns at the bottom of the flavour palette.
  • Overall : long, well-rounded. Bursting with natural beauty, the start of the finish invites meditation. The same rose petals, as well as barley grain, pipe tobacco, barley sugar, candied apricot, black fruit (bramble, blueberry), quince cheese and heady florals (broom, orange blossom) are just some of the notes encountered during this flavour pilgrimage. The retro-nasal olfaction is characterized by dark chocolate, marron glacé and toffee. Bringing us back to the first nose, the empty glass is quite simply an inspiration to start the tasting again.

The brand

Acquired by the Japanese group Nikka in 1989, the Ben Nevis distillery was, under the ownership of Joseph W.Hobbs in 1955, one of the only distilleries in Scotland to have its own traditional pot stills and a Coffey-style column still. Bought by Long John Distillers in 1981, the Coffey stills were subsequently dismantled. Although the majority of its whisky is aged in ex-sherry casks, some ex-bourbon cask bottlings have recently appeared on the independent market. It’s worth noting that the distillery was mothballed for six years at the end of the 1970s, and then again in 1984 and from 1986 to 1989.
