BEN NEVIS 20 years old 1996 52,2%

Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Highlands, 70cl, Ref: 53137

This specially selected single cask from Ben Nevis distillery was distilled in 1996 and aged in a sherry butt. A stone’s throw away from the River Lochy, on the outskirts of Fort William, Ben Nevis creates a full, fruity spirit and is one of the last distilleries to still use brewer’s yeast.

The Single Malts of Scotland is a range of vintage single malt Scotch whiskies selected for their individual quality and character by The Whisky Exchange in collaboration with La Maison Du Whisky. Each single cask has been bottled at cask strength, producing a total of a limited quantity of bottles.

Noté 88/100 par Serge Valentin sur whiskyfun,

Tasting note

  • Nose : initial aromas of toffee and butter candy develop into a medley of rum-soaked prunes, dates and figs. The flavours gradually build in intensity as cocoa nibs and creamy coffee-liqueur notes tempt you further.
  • Palate : full-on flavours of rich dark chocolate, mulled spices, cloves and espresso notes give way to an oily texture and subtle tannins. These add complexity and body to deep and earthy tones of sweet raisins and vanilla sponge cake.
  • Overall : an end note of juicy tiramisu with berry fruits.

The brand

Acquired by the Japanese group Nikka in 1989, the Ben Nevis distillery was, under the ownership of Joseph W.Hobbs in 1955, one of the only distilleries in Scotland to have its own traditional pot stills and a Coffey-style column still. Bought by Long John Distillers in 1981, the Coffey stills were subsequently dismantled. Although the majority of its whisky is aged in ex-sherry casks, some ex-bourbon cask bottlings have recently appeared on the independent market. It’s worth noting that the distillery was mothballed for six years at the end of the 1970s, and then again in 1984 and from 1986 to 1989.

Merchant

A wine merchant recently founded by the Singh brothers, the owners of The Whisky Exchange in the United Kingdom, Speciality Drinks offers three ranges of very different single malts. The first, Port Askaig, is composed of four bottlings of an Islay single malt, including an expression with no age statement and a 30 year old! The second, Elements of Islay, celebrates the different distilleries on the island, each easily identified by their initials. The third, simply dubbed Speciality Drinks, offers a wide selection of single malts from Scottish distilleries.
