ARRAN The Bothy Quarter Cask

Single Malt, Scotland / Highlands-arran, 70cl, Ref: 19711

Aged initially in first-fill bourbon casks, before being finished for at least 18 months in a quarter cask (small cask), this new opus from the Arran distillery has made the most of its optimal contact with the oak to remove the woodiness from its aromatic palette. This allows, now more than ever, the malty, herbaceous, fruity style so characteristic of this single malt - which will celebrate its 20th anniversary at the end of this year - to be fully expressed. The saline notes that also reveal its island character are particularly interesting.

Batch #1 - Quarter Cask Limited edition of 420 bottles Profile: exotic fruit (banana, pineapple), citrus fruit (grapefruit, orange, tangerine) and sweet spices (cardamom, cinnamon). Malty, bitter and liquoricey.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant golden yellow
  • Nose : Rich, refined. Exotic fruit (banana, pineapple), citrus fruit (grapefruit, orange, tangerine) and sweet spices (cardamom, cinnamon) mingle first with notes of musk and heady florals (iris, hyacinth). It becomes increasingly malty with delicate undertones of liquorice. Dried fruit (fig, date) is then unveiled in the grand finale. It has a very fresh vegetal substrata (malting barley, orange blossom).
  • Palate : Lively, almost sharp. From orris butter to cut hay, citrus zest to grey pepper and cocoa beans to black liquorice, the attack arrives with a range of different aspects to explore. The uncompromising mid-palate makes the most of its bitter flavours in order to refresh the palate. It lingers with gentian root and courgette flowers.
  • Overall : Long and fully integrated into the palate, the finish adds refined, almost salty, saline notes. The malted barley gradually takes on an almost mythical dimension (incense). White flesh fruits (pear, peach) help it finally develop into a more fleshy register. The retro-nasal olfaction reveals numerous aromatic herbs (lime blossom, sage, vervain) and heady florals (lavender). With its creamy, vanilla flavours, the empty glass is full of serenity.
The brand

The brand

The Isle of Arran has come a long way and their 10 year old whisky, bottled for some years now, has raised the distillery to the ranks of the great whisky producers. The particularity of Arran whisky is in its finishes, carried out in a wide variety of casks that previously contained wine (from Champagne, Margaux or Marsala) or even brandy (Cognac, calvados). The distillery is also known for producing whisky with various forgotten types of barley, as well as a series of vintage single casks, often bottled at cask strength. Produced on an island near the Scottish mainland, its style is more like Highland malt. Find out more
