ARRAN 8 ans 2011 Peated First-Fill Bourbon Single Cask French Connections 54%
Single Malt Whisky, Scotland / Highlands-arran, 70cl, Ref: 58152
Baptized Machrie Moor, Arran’s first peated version of its single malt was created in 2009. More recently, on 14 March 2019, the first new make left the stills of the brand new Lagg distillery located in the south of the island. Belonging to the same owners, it will be dedicated exclusively to the production of a peated single malt. In line with the Arran 5 Year Old bottled in 2016 for the 60th anniversary of La Maison du Whisky, this version invites us to discover a multi-faceted peat. Alternating between being oily, salty, almost rich, dry, rooty, smoky and medicinal tones, amongst many other charms, this version finds perfect balance in an extremely distinguished and nuanced finish.
Sourcing actor, importer and exclusive distributor of a portfolio of international brands, La Maison du Whisky is, since 60 years a reference for whisky and spirit lovers. Thanks to our close relationships with producers and independent bottlers, we have access to limited editions and unique products we bring to market exclusively. Curious and creative, we are driven by our passion for products and our desire to constantly bring our clients the latest expressions through our own shops, our website whisky.fr and selected wine retail shops in France.
- Appearance : bright gold.
- Nose : refined, deep. On the first nose, a very beautiful oily and salty peat fills the olfactory senses. Around this come fresh fruits (apple, pear), grains of salt and citrus fruit (lemon, grapefruit). Refreshingly herbaceous (green malt, alfalfa), with time it becomes delicately floral (rose, honeysuckle), vanilla-scented and spicy (black pepper, clove). Note that the peat becomes increasingly powerful whilst remaining oily (olive).
- Palate : rich, fairly creamy. Unlike the nose, the attack reveals a drier and more rooty peat (ginseng). Smoke covers the edge of the palate. We also find ginger and candied lemon. The medicinal (ointment, mustard poultice) mid-palate confirms this evolution to a drier register. Nonetheless, at the end of the palate, exotic fruits (pineapple, banana) and infused plants (verbena, rosemary) refresh the palate right when needed.
- Overall : long, distinguished. At the start of the finish, the peat has now found the perfect balance of dryness and humidity. Notes of agave, coconut milk, pressed lemons and vanilla play equal roles with camphor, ash and green liquorice. The retro-nasal olfaction is mentholated and heady (iris butter, lily) and the empty glass hands over to a particularly expressive smoky and peaty malted barley.
- The brand
The Isle of Arran has come a long way and their 10 year old whisky, bottled for some years now, has raised the distillery to the ranks of the great whisky producers. The particularity of Arran whisky is in its finishes, carried out in a wide variety of casks that previously contained wine (from Champagne, Margaux or Marsala) or even brandy (Cognac, calvados). The distillery is also known for producing whisky with various forgotten types of barley, as well as a series of vintage single casks, often bottled at cask strength. Produced on an island near the Scottish mainland, its style is more like Highland malt. Find out more
