ARMORIK Fut de Chouchen - 60th Anniversary LMDW

Single Malt, France / Brittany, 70cl, Ref: 51742

Distilled in February 2011, this edition is very distinctive as it has been finished for two years in a cask that had previously contained Chouchen, the famous Breton mead. Proudly showing its Armorican roots marked with a stamp of seal of authenticity, it also shows great originality. With lots of energy and no fear of taking back roads, it constantly keeps the taster in suspense so that its numerous aromas and flavours can be more keenly appreciated and savoured.

Profile: very authentic, the initial nose is malty and fruity (apple). Mineral, it evolves with notes of sandstone. The palate evokes Havana cigar smoke. It then becomes more voluptuous (custard flan with prunes). The finish is silky, with honey and tertiary notes (prunes, dates).

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant golden yellow with glints of topaz.
  • Nose : firm, rustic and authentic, the initial nose is a melting pot of malted barley, farmhouse cider, strong spices (clove, black pepper), juicy fruits (melon, caramelized apple) and honey (lime blossom, acacia). With tremendous integrity, it then develops notes of forest undergrowth, cut grass and green liquorice. Allowed to breathe, its steely minerality (schist, sandstone) comes beautifully to the foreground.
  • Palate : full-bodied, lively. The attack reveals a clear expression of Havana cigar smoke. Also spicy (Cayenne, paprika), it gradually envelops the taste buds in a fine fruity (Mirabelle plum, apple cider) and spicy liqueur (cinnamon, star anise, cumin). Gradually and with a hint of sweetness, it invites us to taste the famous Breton cakes, kouign-amann and far. Like the nose, it also reveals minerality and salinity.
  • Overall : long and concentrated, notes of artichoke hearts give its texture a very pleasant velvety, creamy character. The influence of the chouchen is undeniable as chunks of honey coated apple literally take hold of the palate. The retro-nasal olfaction offers gentle chocolate and tertiary notes (prune, date). As though marking a signature, notes of damp earth and straw from the empty glass bring us back down to earth.
The brand

The brand

For more than a century this family distillery has produced spirits whose reputation extends beyond Armorican borders, combining innovation and expertise. In 1987, Warenghem began producing the first French single malt: Armorik was born. A genuine symbol of the distillery’s values, Armorik showcases both the quality of its expertise and its love of the Breton terroir: not only are the single malts all aged in Brittany but they also often contain salty notes as well as notes of salted caramel and cooked apples that recall the culinary heritage and traditional alcohol production of the area. These single malts are made from both malted and unmalted barley. A sign of recognised expertise, in February 2014, Warenghem won the gold medal at the “Concours Général Agricole” for their Armorik Classic.
