Independent bottlings of Ardbeg are extremely rare. And so we are proud to be able to offer you this 1998 version bottled by Signatory Vintage for La Maison du Whisky that impressed us when we tasted it for the first time directly from the cask a few months ago. A world in itself, each stage of the tasting is heavily impregnated with a peat whose character subtly changes. The nose is particularly fruity and saline, while the palate exudes sea spray and spices before developing notes of malted barley in an impressively long finish.

Profile : refined, subtle. Assertive peat, yet also fruity and salty. Herbaceous, medicinal (camphor). Spicy (ginger, curry). The palate offers abundant sea spray, earth and salt. The back palate is sublime, with vanilla, chocolate and malted notes as the peat gains in intensity.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : intense yellow.
  • Nose : fine, subtle. Absolutely captivating, the initial nose offers assertive peat, while at the same time bursting with fresh fruit, citrus and salt. Without losing an ounce of its fruity character, it gradually becomes more herbaceous and medicinal (camphor, iodine tincture). Upon aeration, root ginger, damp earth and strong spices (cloves) bring superb refinement to the aromatic palette.
  • Palate : firm, powerful. The attack crashes against cliffs that stand over a raging sea. Nearby fields of peat are drenched in sea spray. The mid-palate is earthy and saline. Then notes of curry and cardamom lead a shift to a more oriental register, with rose petals and Turkish delight. An oasis of freshness, the back palate is absolutely sublime.
  • Overall : long, voluptuous. The peat maintains its presence, with a coating of vanilla and chocolate. The gentle tannic bitterness of the malted barley gradually tightens the taste buds and strengthens the peat’s dominant role in the finish. The retro-nasal olfaction is identical to the finish, while the empty glass is herbaceous (artichoke hearts), powdery (rice, ginger) and resinous (pine).
The brand

The brand

The Ardbeg distillery produces the peatiest single malt in Scotland In the past, the strong peaty character of its single malts originated from a lack of ventilation in the malt kiln which led to the smoky flavours being locked in. In addition to its peaty character, Ardbeg also presents aromas of liquorice and varnish. The single malts offer a charming, rustic character allied with great sophistication and a rich expression. Thanks to a passionate following among whisky enthusiasts, Ardbeg’s production is almost entirely dedicated to its single malt rather than blends. Find out more

Although the independent bottler Signatory Vintage cannot claim to be one of the oldest in Scotland, it has managed to build up an extremely solid reputation amongst the great malt connoisseurs. The creator of the famous range The Prestonfield and many other well-known ranges, it is best known for its un-chillfiltered and cask strength bottlings that offer amateurs the chance to enjoy their whisky in its most natural form. It was also one of the first independent bottlers to acquire a distillery and now offers a growing number of expressions of one of the most artisan single malts available.
