Founded in 2016 by Keiichi Toita, Akkeshi is the second distillery built on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan. Cradled by sea spray and surrounded by the Bekan-Beushi bogs, Akkeshi places a particular emphasis in handcrafting a peaty malt inspired by the Scottish whiskies of the island of Islay.
The resemblance to Islay does not end there, as the Akkeshi community is not unlike the one of Islay, which rallies behind their whisky, present in many local shops. The distillery also has the will to make a 100% Japanese whisky, but more specifically 100% Akkeshi : it can draw from the peat bogs located only a few kilometers away. The Mizunara oak grows there in abundance and finally, the distillery encourages the neighboring farmers to produce local barley for their whisky.
It is this very essence of Akkeshi that we find in this Single Cask, carefully selected by the House of Whisky. Distilled in 2018 and aged only in Bourbon casks, it perfectly transcribes the peat and salinity brought by the umigiri (sea breeze) and the sea wind.
Tasting notes
Nose : The Akkeshi style is well and truly present in this single cask: the nose opens up with the sweet bitterness of citrus fruits dominated by the typicality of the Hassaku orange. The nose becomes more luscious with flower honey biscuits which interweave themselves wonderfully with the sweetness of orange tea.
Appearance : Ambre étincellant
Palate : The attack is iodine and transports us directly to the beaches of Akkeshi, facing the Pacific Ocean. There is an elegant harmony between fruity notes of oranges and lemons associated with spices characterized by their sweetness such as a hint of white pepper.
Overall : The finish reveals delicacy, finesse and delicacy reminiscent of a grandmother's homemade caramel. A sumptuous balance is provided by a slight bitterness brought by notes of candied lemon zest.
Heavily Peated
