30&40 15 ans 2003 Garnier The Chronicles 54,8%
Calvados, France / Normandie, 50cl, Ref: 55365
Bottled by the Trente & Quarante company, this Normandy cider brandy was produced by Domaine Garnier, which is located in Frênes, in the French department of Orne. Aged for 15 years, it is distilled in a column still that dates back to 1923. Resisting the ravages of time, this cuvée reveals an incredibly fresh expression. Its delicate minerality, extroverted fruit, medicinal and herbaceous tones, and and bubbly character are highlights of a tasting that at times reveals more a cider-like character.
Profile: the lively initial nose is refreshingly herbaceous (cut hay), fresh and honeyed. Oxidative, it becomes mineral (chalk) and medicinal (ointment). The sharp attack is effervescently fresh. Coated in vanilla, the mid-palate is spicy (ginger) and floral. The well-balanced finish is in turn spicy, floral, fruity and medicinal. Aromatic plants fill the air on the retronasal olfaction. Single Cask no. R113. Exclusive to LMDW.

- Appearance : intense gold.
- Nose : refined, lively. With remarkable herbaceous freshness (cut hay, alfalfa), the initial nose is also particularly fruity (apple), honeyed (acacia) and lemony. Oxidative once allowed to breathe, it develops mineral notes of chalk and slate. The more it breathes, the more it takes on a medicinal aspect (ointment, mustard grain) that plays an important role in its extroverted character. This olfactory ensemble is incredibly consistent.
- Palate : clean, sharp. The very juicy attack is bubbly. Bursting with fruit (pear, apple) and citrus (lemon, grapefruit), it is gradually covered in a layer of vanilla. Next, grated ginger, green liquorice and cinnamon take over the mid-palate. The very Normandy (bocage, blossoming apple trees) end of the palate is in turn full of energy.
- Overall : long, well-balanced. Spices (pepper, star anise, clove) and white florals (lilac, lily of the valley) share the leading roles in an opening full of eloquence and verbena. Slightly medicinal (camphor, ointment), flavours of fresh cider and acacia honey highlight its very youthful expression. The retronasal olfaction is luscious (sage, chervil) and balsamic (pine, fern). The complex empty glass wavers between lichen, ivy, lily of the valley, coconut milk and fresh fig.
- The brand
The brandStarting originally as an lndependent Calvados bottler, 30&40 was created in 2015 by three spirits aficionados dedicated to defend the unfairly forsaken Normandy brandies. Vincent. Thibault and Aymeric visit the region regularly looking for the very best casks amongst the most talented producers. They like experimenting to create their own unique products blending several apple brandies from different terroirs and distillation processes in order to offer innovative expressions of Normandy spirits. This bold approach is supported by a rigorous process of spirits selection and classification. 30&40 highlights four key stages for making a great brandy : cider production, distillation, maturation and blending
