On the nose, with notes of prune rising from the glass, this pure pot still whiskey from the Midleton distillery eludes immediately to a Bas-Armagnac. On the palate, notes of exotic fruits and varnish lead us confidently back to Irish soil. With time this dichotomy fades and these two intrinsically different worlds find common ground steered by charm, harmony, smoothness, classicism and freshness.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : copper with glints of mahogany.
  • Nose : full-bodied and sweet. With great beauty, the initial nose is marked by candied fruit (apricot), citrus fruit (orange, clementine), toffee and spices (ginger, cinnamon). It develops into notes of beeswax, date and heady florals. Its very sunny character is underscored by a remarkable fruity and chocolate bitterness.
  • Palate : lively, clean. The palate is much more Irish than the nose, with a particularly exotic attack (mango, passion fruit). With sweetness, the mid-palate develops into more jammy fruit flavours (red currant, blackcurrant). Spices (clove, nutmeg) then ensure a spirited tempo. The preciously woody end of the palate is also marked by notes of varnish. Its remarkable concentration is particularly impressive.
  • Overall : long, energetically alternating between moments of pure sweetness (quince jelly, vanilla cream) and mouth-watering, almost saline, bitterness. At the end of the palate, pressed oranges refresh the palate and make for long-lasting, incredibly classic flavours. The retro-nasal olfaction is deliciously honeyed (lime blossom, heather) and the empty glass roasted and spicy (ginger, cinnamon).
The brand

The brand

Redbreast is one of the top Single Pot Still Irish Whiskeys. Each of its bottles is the expression of a perfect mastery of a centuries-old procedure. Produced exclusively at the Midleton distillery, this Irish whiskey respects the three fundamental principles of production: a must created from malted and unmalted barley; triple distillation in copper pot stills; and maturation in first-fill ex-sherry casks and ex-bourbon casks. In 2013, its newest whisky was released, the Redbreast 21 Year Old, embodying the Redbreast style more than ever before and adding the finishing touches to a range that already includes a 12 year old, a cask strength 12 year old and a 15 year old.

The line

The single pot still range was created by Irish Distillers to highlight a style of whiskey that is characteristic of Ireland. The pure pot still recalls the ancestral traditions that are the foundation of Irish whiskey’s reputation: it is made from malted and non-malted barley and is always distilled three times. Since Irish Distillers’ pot still whiskies – Redbreast, Green Spot, Yellow Spot and some releases of Midleton and Powers – are all produced in the same distillery, they could be called ‘single malts’ like the whiskies that come from a single distillery in Scotland.
