All began when the draper Florence-Louis Heidsieck met up with a French lady from the Champagne region. In 1785 he founded the wine and drapery merchants Heidsieck & Cie with the aim of ‘creating a vintage worthy of a queen’. After years of tireless work he had the privilege of presenting his wine to Queen Marie-Antoinette. In the 19th century, the company’s heir went into partnership with a certain Henri-Guillaume Piper to develop the business. During the 1950’s Piper-Heidsieck became very popular on the film industry’s red carpet thanks to the support of Marilyn Munroe. The company has been the official partner of the Cannes Festival for the last 21 years. Red is an integral part of the bottle since the label is also an audacious red, and features in the limited editions, such as the one designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier in 1998. Piper-Heidsieck continues to work with various artists to give this 200-year-old house a contemporary touch.
