PIERRE FERRAND 1914 The Last Cask 40%

Cognac, France / Poitou-Charentes 70cl Ref: 5640

With the men away at war, it was the women, for the first time in the history of Cognac, who distilled the harvest of 1914. Later considered the finest vintage of the 20th century, it was named the “Millésime des Femmes” (The Women’s Vintage). Pierre Ferrand here presents the last barrel of this precious nectar distilled a century ago in a run of only 202 bottles.

Profile: vitality and freshness on both the nose and the palate. Notes of fig, almond and tobacco. The end of the palate has heady notes of praline and vanilla

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant orangey copper
  • Nose : rich, complex. The initial nose is incredibly fruity for such a venerable cognac. Candied apricots mingle with pineapple and mango. Once aerated, it develops into a more floral register (grapevine flower, iris). Increasingly concentrated, it develops into candied citrus fruit (orange, tangerine) and notes of incense and camphor. Fine wood dust is steadily sprinkled over the aromatic palette.
  • Palate : taut, lively. As with the nose, the attack on the palate has retained a huge amount of freshness and energy. With the same exoticism (pineapple, mango), it develops into notes of liquorice and dried fruit (almond, fig). More tertiary, the mid-palate is roasted (tobacco, tea) and spiced (saffron, fresh ginger). It lingers with apricot kernel and dark chocolate
  • Overall : long, delicate. Full of smoothness, its touch evokes the skin of perfectly ripe fruits. Praline and gentle vanilla flavours mingle at the very end of the palate with heady florals (hyacinth, lilac) and passion fruit. The retro-nasal olfaction wavers between raisins and noble wood. The empty glass favours beeswax over currants.
The brand

The brand

The Pierre Ferrand estate is located in Angeac, in the golden triangle of Cognac, in the heart of the limestone terroir of Grande Champagne. Distillation is carried out in small pot stills (25 hl) in order to gain a maximum concentration of aromas, and the role of cellar master has been passed down from father to son through five generations. A grand terroir, small stills and ancient skills and expertise are all brought together to produce one of the best premier crus of Cognac. But the impressive skills of the house don’t end there! It also produces numerous gins and vodkas, as well as a liqueur and its own range of rums.
