The balance, finesse, complexity, silkiness, vivacity, maturity, freshness, nobility and poetry with which this version invites us to discover the breadth of its palette of aromas and flavours deserve much more than just a tasting note - which would in any case be sure to fall short of reality. So, instead of using words we’ll let this Jura, which was distilled over forty years ago, speak for itself and pay tribute to the men that created this pure masterpiece.

Profile: full-bodied, the nose is delicately peaty and camphoric. Notes of orange and dark chocolate. Allowed to breathe, it becomes medicinal, candied and floral (hyacinth). First come noble spices, followed by a remarkably exotic, layered palate. Jura shines with radiant beauty.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : orangey copper.
  • Nose : full-bodied, developed. Delicately peaty and camphoric, the initial nose is also marked by delicious notes of orange and dark chocolate. Allowed to breathe, it becomes more medicinal. Its increasingly candied fruits and peat are dressed in heady perfumes (freesia, hyacinth) and noble spices (saffron, nutmeg). Overall the nose shows impressive structure, silkiness and serenity.
  • Palate : lively and spicy. Incredibly exotic (mango, passion fruit, persimmon, guava, etc.), the attack on the palate shows a huge freedom of expression. With a charming maturity, the mid-palate explores new fruity (orange, red and black fruits), floral (violet, lilac) and chocolate lands. At this point, Jura shines with a radiant beauty like that of a stunning sunset. A very refreshing saltiness further enhances the sensation of fullness that emanates from the palate.
  • Overall : long, silky. Dark chocolate, tobacco leaves, mango, bitter orange, liquorice, leather, pecan, lime blossom honey and wild strawberry. And a whole host of other flavours, including vervain, almond, Mirabelle plum, a hint of camphor and dried peat come and go. This is the final bouquet offered by this Jura 1975. The retro-nasal olfaction reflects the palate and the empty glass is divinely floral and slightly earthy.
The brand

The brand

Linked only to Islay by a mini-ferry, the distillery is probably one of the most isolated in Scotland. It’s therefore no surprise that its single malt is so easily identifiable, its isolation giving it its own character marked by heart-warming and exotic sensations. Only very lightly peated, Jura has a freshness of mentholated pear that goes hand-in-hand with its malty and salty notes in its 10 and 16 year old expressions. To compete with its neighbour Islay, Jura also began producing a very peaty single malt: Superstition. Find out more
