GLENLIVET 1974 Over 40 Years 5th Edition S.V 46,8%

Single Malt, Scotland / Speyside 70cl Ref: 19624

Last 48 months spent in a sherry cask has had a considerable impact on the aromatic and rich palette of this venerable Glenlivet, which has been aged for over 40 years and released as part of the ARTIST range. It is a simple testament to patience and to choosing the right moment to bottle a cask tasted year after year. The least we can say is that the wait was worth while, as this version gives an incredible sensation of richness and maturity.

Single Cask #1 – Hogshead and Sherry Finish Limited edition of 240 bottles – LMDW world exclusive. Profile: huge personality. Wavers between exotic fruit, citrus fruit and notes of courgette and red kuri squash.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : orangey copper with glints of green.
  • Nose : delicate, balanced. Strong spices (paprika, nutmeg, cloves) form an initial olfactory setting which is full of character. Behind this determined start, we find candied orange, heady florals (iris), aromatic plants (camomile), schist and emery cloth. Gradually we are plunged into the aromas of a carpenter’s workshop filled with citron melon, wood pulp and varnish. It then becomes exotic (mango, passion fruit).
  • Palate : fine, concentrated. The same spicy fervour steers the attack. Pepper and ginger arrive, to join the spices already present. The mid-palate is especially original, oscillating between exotic fruit, citrus and notes of courgette and red kuri squash. Gradually, velvety, vanilla tannins coat the taste buds at the end of the palate.
  • Overall : unctuous, creamy. With a very pleasant vanilla and fruity (coconut) freshness, the finish becomes increasingly floral (hollyhock, peony). Black liquorice and camphor give renewed vitality to the retro-nasal olfaction. Reverent and inspired, the empty glass welcomes us into a dark, humid cellar.
The brand

The brand

Dubbed simply The Glenlivet, a name which at the time represented a region extremely well-loved for the quality of its whiskies, this distillery was first granted its licence in 1824. Seen as an act of bravery for some and an act of betrayal for others, this allowed it to get a step ahead of the other distilleries in operation. Today one of the most prominent distilleries in Scotland, its single malt is known throughout the world. Mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, The Glenlivet has a fresh and spring-like character marked by citrus and floral notes. Bottlings aged entirely in sherry casks can only be found through independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail.

Artist, Lands of Scotland, Malt Pedigree, Tartan, The Ten, Very Cloudy... all of these whisky ranges – composed of single malts and single grains – have one thing in common: they were all created by the team at La Maison du Whisky. They are the fruits of many decades of close collaboration with some of the most prestigious bottlers in Scotland. For some years the French importer and exclusive distributor of the classic ranges of well-known spirits producers, La Maison du Whisky was soon granted the very rare privilege of being able to complement these ranges with their own, bringing together two sets of expertise, two reputations and two complementary histories under one, single label.

The line

Baptised ‘Artist’, this new range makes no bones about proclaiming its identity. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, it draws its inspiration from the style that gave the Italian bottlings of the 60s and 70s their cult following. From the choice of whiskies (distillery, ageing process, age, strength, bottling procedure) to the design of the bottle and choice of label, every detail has been carefully considered. This range offers a fine presentation of both the whiskies and the artist whose works have been selected for the back labels.
