GLEN ELGIN 2000 Refill Sherry

Single Malt, Scotland / Speyside 70cl Ref: 18885

Situated in the heart of Speyside, the Glen Elgin distillery produces a little-known single malt. This version, straight out of the warehouses of the renowned independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail will no doubt contribute to this single malt’s reputation. It must be said that it does have many strong points. The first one being a good dose of serenity that allows it to digress rapidly from an accomplished classicism to exuberant generosity.

Single Cask #2971 - Refill Sherry Hogshead Limited edition of 348 bottles Exclusive to LMDW Profile: sharp. Fresh fruit (Mirabelle plum, Williams pear, pineapple, walnut). Medicinal (ointment) and balsamic (pine resin, cedar). Green liquorice. Malted barley.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : vibrant gold.
  • Nose : sappy, precise. Delicate notes of cocoa perfectly wrapped up in subtle citrus fruits (lemon, clementine). Fresh fruit (Mirabelle plum, Williams pear) then transcends the initial nose. All of this is then covered with a fine herbaceous and slightly medicinal (ointment) layer.
  • Palate : both sharp and highly serene, the attack mirrors the nose down to every last detail. Later, herbaceous and medicinal notes take centre stage. Then delicate green liquorice cools the ardour of the mid-palate and gives it plenty of life and rhythm. A multitude of fruit (pear, pineapple) punctuates this remarkable palate.
  • Overall : long, endless. Fully expresses an unusual floral character (dandelions, carnations) as well as bags of succulent fruit (pineapple, redcurrant, white currant). The retro-olfaction is warm (multi-flower honey) and balsamic (pine resin, cedar). The empty glass is a mixture of malted barley and hollyhock.
The brand

The brand

The Glen Elgin distillery was founded in 1898, the year the Pattison brothers declared bankruptcy causing the ruin of numerous distilleries, and is located in Speyside. Its first years of production were marked by several periods of closure. A long time in the shadow of the Johnnie Walker blend, the Glen Elgin single malt was first officially bottled as part of the Flora & Fauna collection, before being released as a 12 year old at the beginning of the millennium. Independent bottlings of the malt are just as hard to find.

This independent bottler is without a doubt one of the most highly acclaimed in Scotland. It stands out, not for its age (though it is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland), but for its complete mastery of cask ageing. Gordon & MacPhail is the only bottler to have its own casks - carefully chosen for the purpose - filled by the distilleries themselves, instead of simply buying the ones suggested to them by the latter. This allows it to determine, in advance and with great precision, exactly how many years a whisky will need to reach ideal maturation.

The line

Located in the heart of Speyside, Gordon & MacPhail have excellent business relations with the region’s main distilleries. Each one has a specific label, originally associated with a semi-official release. Another label enables specialists such as La Maison du Whisky to bottle single casks in accordance with their specifications. Called simply Gordon & MacPhail Reserve, this range has now introduced a different colour label for each production region.
